aerobic exercise in conjuntion with a good weight training program and a good diet, dont worry you wont bulk up like everyone thinks, just go to your local gym and talk with a professional trainer or get a book the one I recommend is Body for Life. Also you should be eating about 6-8 small meals a day High protein, low carbs, low fat. Dont cut the carbs out because you will lose to much energy just make sure the carbs are good carbs. If you follow the Body for Life you will trim up in about 16 weeks. I have seen a lot of people at the gym come in and use the program in the book with great results and most of them never bought any supplements that were recommended.

Got the same problem.
Lost 10 inches (from 40 to 30 waist), but still had the handles. That was 15 years ago. Still have them.
Do what everyone else has said, cut carbs, do lotsa cardio, I wd only add do lots, I mean thousands, of crunches, and ESPECIALLY OBLIQUES!
Here is why: your body is 3-dimensional. Most people when they lose weight only think in 2 dimensions: from the front, and from the side view. They forget that most other view them in a cross-view most of the time. The 'girdling' effect of the very important obliques serves to firm up a waist line, and give the defined V-shape that gives the appearance of a slender waist.
You may still have the love handles and abit of padding, but your toned muscles will enable you to 'wear them well' and trust me, people will tell you you look thinner, even though the numbers, waistline, and body comp have not actually changed all that much. You will just naturally hold yourself in better from the strengthened muscles, and as a spin-off, you will have better posture, and appear to stand taller....and so appear to be thinner.
Good luck.

Lots of sit ups and crunchies,,, really it works :) I went from a 37'' waist to a 33'' with the help of sit ups and crunchies. Mind you, I was doing lots of other exercisees too. But you said you have already lost weight, so I'd say the this would be just fine to trim your waist. To get my waist smaller, I did 250 sit ups/crunchies a day. 125 in the morning and 125 before bed. It may seem like alot,,, but if you're committed it will only take about 10 minutes of your time each morning and night. Once I reached my desired size,,, I just stuck to doing 125 at night before bed to maintain my size. This is from 8 months of experience but don't worry. As long as you do the Sit-Ups and Crunchies right,,,, You will be much more toned before Christmas :)

Waist specific exercises e.g. Bending side to side using dumbells for added benefits. Lying on the back and raising both legs together. Hanging off a horizintal bar and lifting both legs towards the horizontal position. Strapping your ankles and bringing your body up. Arms akimbo and rotating you body as much as possible first from right to left then left to right. Butterfly strokes in swimming exercises the waist well. In summary, anything that bends the body in the middle and side to side will do the job.

do a month without starch: no bread, no pasta, no potatoes, no rice, no cereals, nothing made of grains or flours.
eat foods that are rich in fibres and proteins, and take nutritional supplements (i recommend Nutrilite, www.quixtar.com if in N. America, otherwise email me and I'll find out for you) Nutrilite also has this awesome snack product called protein bars and an energy drink called XS energy--they taste soooo good and are ideal if you're trying to loose inches and keep it like that. from my experience it's easier to loose weight snacking on Nutrilite protein bars every three hours or so rather than starving myself in between meals.
do thirty situps when you wake up in the morning and before going to bed at night. do some gentle cardiovascular exercise every day for 20-30 mins (e.g. briskwalking, swimming, biking).
when your carb-free month is over you can go back to them, but make sure you only eat "brown" or "wholemeal". but for the rest, continue your new good habits.
yeah, that's the key: good habits and baby steps. not a diet--going on a diet is like going on a holiday: you come back. but if you exchange the old bad habits for good ones and mentally affirm yourself every day, you will keep your new shape and continue feeling so good about yourself.
good luck!
