There are two glands just inside of the dogs (and cat) anus. These glands are secreted as the dog defecates. There is a scent left behind that is only known by that dog. The problem occurs when they are not doing it by themselves anymore. So some owners have it done on a regular basis. You may notice your dog scooting or licking excessively at his anus. This may be a sign that your dogs anal glands are full and need to be expressed. I do this all the time and it is not at difficult to do. Some vets will even teach you do this at home.

Because the get filled and the animal is unable to void the contents. Generally, this is an easy procedure that can be done in the Vet's office and provides great relief to the pet. I have had this situation occur with two of my dogs and an occasional trip to the Vet did the trick. This situation can resolve itself after an initial treatment. I don't know the exact details so if you just type "canine anal sacs" in your search bar you will find many websites that address this phenomenon. FYI: If a dog has impacted anal sacs you will quickly be aware of it as they work themselves into a frenzy with licking and often biting at the anus or junction of the tail to the rump.
