its OLD! either the cable is going or the speedo itself is kaput. go try a wrecker and swap these parts till it works (find a nice wrecker!) or get a drill and remove/diconnect cable and connect to drill, turn on slow then fast and see if cable is same(put a load on cable first). usually cable stretches over time(being spun at speed tends to do that!) OR your gear drive in g'box is moving because of too much slack..check it hasn't come loose!

If your vehicle has a cable driven speedometer then it needs to have the speedometer cable lubricated. On older vehicles that use a cable this is common and the cable can be removed and lubricated on newer vehicles with an electronic system then the speed sensor is likely the problem as a bad sensor can cause the speedo to jump as you describe.

Before this question can be answered one needs to know if it is a mechanical magnetic or a digital speedometer.

Well seems that meter is not showing you the exact speed even before 40 MPH speed.. do one thing.. if you can open the dash boards panel.. put some breakoil into it and then try.. or if the cord is broken i am afraid you'd have to get the new one
