It was part of the uniform. Leather helmuts were more a thermal layer and nearly all pilots from WW1 on up wore some kind of device like that. A number incorporated headsets for radio comm.
in WW II as well. Not so much as a protection device.

Radio comunication. Helmets have headphones. Also cuts the engine noise on you ears.

kamikazes were not suicide bombers.They only used to dive if they had no fuel or knew they cannot win or considered the target a vey important one they were allmost normal exept they were braver.

they needed to hear the radio traffic, and don't think they wanted to be kamikaze, most of them were forced to. some were even bolted into the plane.

those "caps" just kept them warm and were used listen to radio-communications... those were no protective "helmets" like today.
They needed to have a comfortable flight (like every pilot) to accomplish their (suicidal) missions...

They didn't want their hair blowing in their eyes so they could see where they were going to put their planes down, and not over shoot the target. (I don't know, they probably didn't even have any hair for all I know)...
