It is something like 3% that go on to lead "normal" lives. However, having said that, this research is based on the little intervention these people had as children. These days, the children are diagnosed earlier and are more likely to receive help earlier so their chances are much much higher. It can also depend on how severe the ASD is, as well as whether the person is high functioning or not may play a part in determining whether they can get a job etc..

By the way, ignore the idiots that claim all autistic children are retards, the person below must be a retard herself.

As for cause, we don't know yet, could be biological but research shows genetics have a lot to do with it.

I've known two autistic adults. The older one was hidden away but lived to be quite old. I don't remember him very well, as he passed away when I was a kid; we visited him sometimes in an institution. (He was the brother of a close family friend.)

The younger one (an in-law - he's about 30) is currently doing very well in a group home and goes to family celebrations and even does some traveling for pleasure with a paid companion. He seems to enjoy his life quite a lot, and his mother and brother spend a lot of time with him.

Rent Dustin Hoffman's amazing "Rain Man" - it is a well-researched portrayal of an autistic man. The younger man I mentioned above has a lot of the same traits.

I heard of one concern-the place childrens can grow to be autistic-do no longer remember what that's-grew to become into on a documentray on a helath channel---that is no longer listed on the autism spectrum nevertheless-purely mimics autism.... an grownup can show autistic traits after some form of strategies trauma/injury-in spite of the indisputable fact that this is probably not seen to be autism.
