My 5-year-old female cat has a problem with diarhea, if I give her too much milk, or the wrong kind of food, etc. What's a good brand of food to feed her for this? (I am in the midwestern US, by the way).

If you're giving your cat cow's milk, that could be causing the diarrhea. They are basically "lactose intolerant". There are cat milk substitutes you can buy at Petsmart or even grocery stores.
You might also try feeding her a "sensitive stomach" or "sensitive systems" food. Purina One and Science Diet have them.
She also might be allergic to an ingredient common to cat foods, like wheat. You get good at reading labels when that happens. My cat Spot had a wheat allergy.
One other thing to be aware of - cheaper cat foods vary their ingredients based on what grain is cheaper at the time, so they are not consistent. Some cats have problems with those changes. More expensive brands, like Science Diet, Royal Canin, and Iams keep their formula the same regardless of whether corn is cheaper than wheat. (Just as an aside, I really don't like Iams, and won't buy their products because they still do unnecessary testing on animals. I don't mean seeing which food the cats like best, I mean invasive, painful testing.)
Check with your vet about other possible solutions before you spend a small fortune on different kinds of food.
I hope you find something that works for her. She can be your loyal companion and confidant for many years to come.

First off, I know giving a cat milk is going to give them dirarhea. A taste once in awhile is OK, but a bowl is too much. Cats weren't born drinking from cows. The best foods that I have been researching come from holistic brands available in most fine pet stores. Canned is best to keep weight off. Dry with atleast 1 to 2 meats as first ingredients.

For one thing, lay off the milk for a while, my cats get that from milk. I give them dry food, usually Purina, then I give them Fancy Feast wet food. I have 5 cats, by the way. I would suggest vitamins, too, they sell them at pet shops. I give my cats milk maybe one time a week now. They have not had diarrhea for a while. Good luck.

First of all never mind giving her too much milk...you shouldn't be giving her any milk at all. That will likely end your problem with diarrhea. It's not good for them at all except for 3 to 6 months worth from their mother! Second, don't feed your animals IAMS food as they treat animals inhumanely and pet people shouldn't support this behaviour. If you have Science Diet pet food in your area I would recommend that as it's what I feed my cats as per recommendation of my local veterinarian.

Stop the milk, definitely. Give her a dry food that she can eat throughout the day. Pro-plan is widely available and has the highest protein percentage for commercially available brands.
They also have different varieties including "sensitive stomach."
Also 1/2 to 1/3rd can of fancy feast twice a day and constant access to fresh water.

For my cat, I give her wet and dry cat food from Friskies, Nine Lives, and Whiskies. Those are good brands for your cat. Try a flavor first and see which one she likes best.

Don't give her cow's milk, and feed her Iam's adult in the orange bag. Works for my cats. Good luck.
