The others are right, there isn't much in Penrith; cattle market and bus station. If you are staying out of the summer tourist season, then stay at Keswick, Carlisle or Kirby Stephen and drive the short distance to Penrith. If you are staying in the tourist season forget that because you will be stuck behind endless caravans heading into the lakes.

I agree that Jennings beer is good.

Penrith is a dive. Go over to Keswick its much more scenic and the pubs and better.

Try going on the A66 all the way to the coast instead. Keswick is nice but expensive, avoid Workington and Maryport. Whitehaven is ok, try the Waterfront!
