She is Eskimo/border colly mis, 14 years old, has had cataracts, complete in one eye, well over 50% in the other, has had them for years, and has adapted well. NOW she has gone completely deaf, and spends much of her time lost in the house, will get distressed and just stand and bark until we go up and touch her.

She is amazingly healthy other than this. She knows her yard and gets exercise, eats well, her coat is lovely and stays well groomed with minimum of input from us.

For anyone whose dog has had cataract surgery, do you think that would help her at this point? It looks like she will live quite a bit longer, and would be willing to do this if it would enhance her life.

We love her lots, and it breaks my heart to see her get so "lost" in the house. She has a companion dog, a Jack Russell, almost the same age, and this one's disability has resulted in a little intimidation and bullying behavior from the other one.

If you have the money and you think it's the best decision for your dog I would talk to your vet. I have a cat that has poor hearing and eyesight (15years old) and he has adapted quite well, of course he can see a little it's funny to watch him drink his water he has to stick his paw in to see how deep it is) Talk to your vet and come to a decision that is both right and fair for both you and the dogs.

Cataract surgery is very expensive, it is the same procedure for animals that it is for humans. Your dog is old, and maybe you have waited to late to correct the eye problem. It is hard at any rate to think about putting ones pet to "sleep", but you have to consider the quality of life that the dog has now.

My Father in law & my brother in law have
dogs that have had the surgery & it went great.
Both of the dogs are so much happier & playful !

It depends the size of the cataract though, if it's
a certain size or shape the vet can not operate.

best of luck to your pooch .

I'm sorry but a her age I think it would be a risk to put her under for the op! you should speak to your vet, the loss of two of her senses may be too cruel for a dog to live with, already you need to be in touching distance for her to feel secure. What is good for her at this stage may not be what is easiest for you. Please speak To your vet and I wish you both well.

THATS ENTIRELY UP TO YOU. ITS NOT GOING TO STOP HER FROM BEING HEALTHY AND AT THAT AGE WHAT WILL THE ANISECTIC DO TO HER
