My stepdad committed suicide last year and before he died, I held a lot of resentment and anger at him for things he had done for the last four years. Then, I had many nightmares about him and me fighting and hurting him. However, I still have those nightmares and I have about three to four of them every month. Can anyone tell me why?

"I held a lot of resentment and anger at him for things he had done for the last four years..."

Your nightmares are essentially your subconcious working out this anger and resentment in your sleep. You (presumably) cannot get these emotions out while awake because (a) he is dead so it doesn't seem right and (b) you (may) feel guilty about having had the anger against him just before he died.

In order to get rid of them you will need to talk to a phsycologist or counsellor, and thereby work out the cause of your anger and resentment and how you might come to final closure over it.

Without knowing details of your stepdad's behavior, it would seem that the nightmares are simply the result of what he put you through. I don't see anything wrong with you. Having nieces who were abused, my opinion is that if your problems are limited to nightmares you are fortunate indeed. It may well be that you would benefit from therapy or counseling. Especially if his behavior toward you included abuse (my guess is that it was abuse) and so, find a counselor who deals with that. There are sites that might help and here's one: http://therapists.psychologytoday.com/ppc/prof_search.php?iorb=4764
The nieces' memories of abuse started as vague, dark clouds, of unease, and bad things before they remembered details.

Probally guilt. But I am not a doctor. Maybe you feel bad about the way the two of you got along before he took his own life. And maybe the fact that he took his own life is a cause as well.

Our dreams are our way to, "Cleanse" the subconscience, so to say. All dreams have a specific meaning or interpretation. I believe that it's a way of letting you know that you have some unresolved issues about your fathers death. Now, the key word here is, "you". You're struggling to come to whatever terms necessasary to ease your mind and find peace with your fathers death, and with yourself. (This is only my opinion.)

Maybe you still hold some hidden guilt, it's quite normal, I lost my father recently and often have dreams about him. You should maybe talk to you mum or someone about it.

Because you have guilt. However, you are human but you still need to let go and let God!
