Does holding one's breath increase pulse rate? Take someones pulse (at the wrist) and count out loud each beat while a second experimentor places slashes on a paper with pencil (///// ///) and a third experimentor (with a watch) places a larger slash separating counts every 15 seconds. After getting a steady "reading" have the subject take a deep breath on "mark!" (at a new 15 second interval) and hold it until uncomfortable. Compare beats in the intervals. Multiply beats within a 15 second interval by 4 (as nurses do) to get the beats per minute. Make a plot on the blackboard or graph paper showing the change in beats per minute (bpm) with time. Answer the question. Decide why. Although lack of oxygen makes us want to breathe, buildup of carbon dioxide is a stronger brain signal. Those with a weak CO2 signal may run out of oxygen and faint (while swimming under water holding their breath?). Try the experiment again with a shallow breath and compare graphs. Good luck.
