Is it just me or are people today getting even more hung up on looks and having the latest fads than they were 10-15 years ago? And What's with men getting 2 earrings and going on sunbeds??? Vanity obviously isn't just for the women any more?

I'm not into that stuff. I don't even wear make up. I also don't understand how people can even think the fashion these days look good. Why would a girl/women wear a skirt over pants, or a dress with pants? It looks like sh!t.

Because they are stupid. In the end none of it will have mattered. People just can't realize that straight away.

And obviously media puts the focus on it way too much because it is far too much money to be made in peoples insecurities.

Womens self esteem is big business. And mens will be bigger too. Only question is how far are people gonna go before they realize how shallow it is? How empty and meaningless it is? When you lie next to your hot model bf/gf in bed but still feel completely alone in the world.

People seem to think of their wives (and husbands sometimes) as some status symbol, an object, as I have mentioned many times already, I hate how men act like they own womens beauty and have the right to tell them they need to work for it. They don't need. Need for who? For what?

No man is worth the trouble.

People have just accepted too much that money makes the world go 'round, and do nothing to improve it from not being so. They'd rather accept bad things than to do what's right but takes more work.

I will never understand it either, because there is nothing more unsexy than porn-tan, bleeched horse-teeth and hair extentions.

People are insecure. We live in a very narcissistic age where the power of the media is unrivaled when it comes to stalking celebrities. We are celebrity obsessed. Everything is celebrity this, celebrity that. Women want to look like Jessica Simpson, because then they think they'd be happy. It's all about wanting to be loved, adored, idolized, because inside they really don't like themselves very much. But that 's the world: a simmering stew pot of neuroses. As I move through life, I find it gets crazier all the time. Everyone's so messed up, to the point it's laughable. What I'm finding is that people are not worth taking seriously, for the most part.

I used to be very materialistic and conscious of appearance, I was brought down to earth with a nasty bump through being sent to prion ( never charged with anything either) but I lost so much, not only freedom, but much of the material goods I had, but one thing kept me going, the fact I still had my husband, and that got us both through an horrendous time, coming out of prison together and rebuilding our lives, we have a completely different emphasis on our viewpoints, and what's unimportant in life to us now. The fcat we can wake up together each day and we have our freedom, of sorts, is far more valuable than nice CD players, endless amounts of jewellery and furninshings...

This is not to say we have let go of ourselves, we do still look after ourselves and look good, but only for each other, no one else matters...nor does anyone else's view on what we look like outwardly

Thank god they are putting importance on looks, my wife works in a salon and without them we would be skint !
But it is true what you say that men are going for spraytans, sunbeds, manicures and body waxing. I myself am a bit of a traditionalist in that I have just the one earing, shave my head ( no ponsy hair do's for me) and my idea of perfume is a quick blast form the Gilette underarm.

Its the relentless drive of capitilism, which actually requires that people are insecure, anxious and hung up whilst promising them happiness.

Unhappy people make obedient consumers.

And you are right, insecurities about looks are increasingly spreading to men, which is leading to more disorders related to physical appearance.
