Sorry to disappoint but I have never been against A/S but I have recently had one try to buy a car from me with a Gov Giro, that is not a myth, or urban legend, and I certainly am not a member of the BNP!!

I have heard this story before but am still unsure if it is true or not. I have also been told that the seller has been contacted by the DSS and told that the car is required so that the asylum seekers can seek work - like we don't have a public transport system of any sort.

So, IF it is true, then it is grossly unfair.

But I think we should treat this story with suspicion - or make enquires with our local DSS offices. Or MP's etc.

AND, if it is true then I WANT MY MONEY BACK! (tax/ni etc) because I am not paying for someone elses car!

This is not something I have heard of. It may be the case that the person thought it was a negotiable instrument and tried to pay for the car with it.

I also doubt the indivdual would have told you that he/she were an asylum seeker.

I would have told them to come back with the cash, and a full driving licence, either that or phoned the police. It would seem very suspicious to me. There is no way of knowing if it was that person's cheque.

As for your other comment, I can fully understand your frustration. It appears that the government are happy to let our hospitals fall to pieces and force our students to pay for their higher education yet give handouts to a bunch of spongers.

yep its true my friends nabour sold his bmw to some they came back with a dhs cheque wen he rang up about it he was told they need a car to look for work & its cheeper in long run than paying for taxis, also they can not go on the bus as they dont speek englis, forget that in my city most of the bus drivers dont speek english, go & stand out side your dhs ofice & you will see they also all have brand new leather jackets mobile phones, they look like clones,
also my son did 11 year in british army & only got pay related jobseekers alowance that was less than they get & it has now stopped so he gets nothing now but theirs carys on, he got a loan to pay a bill they £60 they told him thats it he will not be able to have another one & he had to pay it all back, yet asylum seekers can have hundreds & they say dont wory about paying back if you want more no problem the country has gone to the dogs come the revolution

Don't be so gullible. This is precisely the kind of rubbish far right groups like the BNP peddle to build support and create animosity. Stop and ask yourself - if it sounds to good to be true for the asylum seekers in comparison with others here, it probably ISN'T TRUE. Asylum seekers don't get very much at all, its a degrading and dehumanising process trying to claim asylum in the UK; and added to that the hideously unfriendly welcome too many people here give them you've got to know their desperation to stay that they put up with that.

First to clear up confusion. Asylum seekers are not allowed to work within the United Kingdom, they do not have that right. People with Asylum are allowed to work, this is AFTER they have been granted the right to reside in the UK. Asylum Seekers are temporary residents awaiting a descision form the Home Office.

There are a few exceptions to this, for instance if they have been waiting more than 12 months they are allowed to seek work, however if they get it their benefits will be means tested to see if they are allowed to continue receiving them.

Refugees are NOT asylum seekers, they are people who have been granted asylum, don't like that..vote BNP and become a failed Briton.

Check this from Blackburn.gov, link is in sources.

Asylum seekers considered destitute receive weekly cash payments which are equivalent to 70% of regular income support.

In December 2003, around 80,000 asylum seekers were receiving Home Office support, compared with 15.5 million Britons on benefits (excluding retirement pensions), meaning that 0.5% of those claiming government support were asylum seekers, (middle part of quote (stats) edited out for brevity).

> 0.5% < Wow! thats such a huge drain to help people who have been starved, tortured, threatened, abused etc.

As to a loan for a car, they were NOT asylum seekers, they were refugees granted asylum.

Taken from homeoffice.gov (link in sources below).

The Integration Loan

The Integration Loan is a new initiative to provide interest-free loans to refugees to help their integration into UK society. When refugee status is granted, the refugee enters into a critical period during which most refugees will need to find accommodation, train or re-qualify and seek employment. Early on in a refugee's integration an interest-free loan, with gentle repayment terms, will make a considerable impact on their ability to become established in the UK. It is intended that the loan will be spent on items and activities that facilitate integration, particularly those related to housing, education and employment.

Now i can't find anything about government loans relating to cars therefore I am assuming (note: assumption from finding no facts, therefore may not be correct) that they were using the Integration Loan to get a car to improve work prospects.

All this money comes from central government not local, therfore the cost burden is spread over the nation, NOT burdening local govt with extra local debt.

Instead of posting stupid knee jerk opinions and semi-mythological fact why not do what I did, research your answers and before posting questions see if you find the info yourself and save making yourselves look like fools.

I did 2 searches to get all this info:

"benefits for asylum seekers"

"govt loans for asylum seekers"

Not hard...is it?
