The term Visa was adopted throughout the credit card industry starting with, I think, Barclaycard to define an internationally accepted card in the same way that a visa in a passport gives international acceptance. At that time a conglomeration of banks throughout the world accepted the logo on licence with a rival network 'Mastercard' also setting up. Prior to that the only international cards were Diners Club and American Express.

The VISA card was launched in 1976, and the card was derived from the earlier BankAmericard issued by Bank of America.
This specific VISA does not specifically stands for anything but VISA on the passports stands for the Latin carta visa, lit. "the document has been seen".
