Spina Bifida is a defect which is present at birth. In Britain, incidence varies from one area to another. Spina Bifida is only partially hereditary. However once there has been an affected pregnancy, there is an increased risk of further Spina Bifida pregnancies. The risk of an adult with Spina Bifida having a child with a similar condition is approximately 1 in 25.

My mother has Spina Bifida and has three chrildren, all three of us are fortunate and do not have Spina Bifida but she did take precautions and took folic acid on all three of us.
Please take Folic Acid start one month before you conceive and then during your pregnacy there is no harm in taking precautions. It is not yet evident if Spina Bifida is hereditary, there is some evidence to suggest the condition can be based more so on where you live and the amount of folic acid present in your system if your folic acid levels are low then they should be increased to try and prevent the condition being passed on.
I hope I was of help I also worry about this as my mother has Spina Bifida and I want a healthy child but folic acid is your best bet as of yet. Also genetic counselling for this condition is good and it is becoming possible to tell the mother during pregnacy if the child will have the condition and she will have the option to abort - however in no way am I suggesting you do this or even saying that it will come to this but its just nice to know all the information upfront.
Listen I really wish you the best and hope I was of help. Good Luck. x

Most cases of spina bifida are due to spontaneous abnormalities in the baby and are not hereditary. Take folic acid before pregnancy and you should think about consulting your hospital service as soon as your pregnancy test is positive with a view to having a nuchal translucency test at 11 to 14 weeks.
Hydrocephalus can be detected in a foetus as early as the latter part of the first trimester of pregnancy. Around 20 to 24 weeks of gestation, abnormal dilation of the foetus's ventricles is more clearly detectable.
If you aren't sure both of you should go and talk to your doctor.

Not necessarily. About 90% of babies born with spina bifida are born into family with no history.
A person with spina bifida has a less than 5 percent chance of passing it on.
A mother who already has one child with spina bifida has a greater chance of having another child with a neural tube defect than a mother who herself has spina bifida.
There is no known cause of spina bifida, it could be environmental or genetic.

it is thought spina bifida has both genetic and environmental factors, so the chance of having a baby with spina bifida is slightly increased if one parent has it (the risk is about about 4%)
you can seek pre-conception genetic counselling - ask your doctor or GP
folic acid is highly recommended - your doctor will advise
