Hi there !
First of all let me say..this is one of those very few sensible questions anybody has asked in this column.
The life or death in humans is decided by the vital parameters like Respiration, Brain function and Heart function..
In Brain death..whats happening is ....
Brain has stopped functioning while the function of the Heart and Lungs are maintained by the outside mechanical systems like ventilators..
or in other words, the patient is alive ...since the respiration and the heart functions are maintained because the patient is connected to the machines called as ventilators. If it is removed, the patient will die. In this condition, death is NOT declared since the 2 of the vital parameters are functioning...( Brain is not functioning.)
In other deaths, which are usually immediate, due to various reasons, all the organs of Lungs, Heart and the Brain stop functioning and hence the death is announced or declared.

Brain dead refers to a person who has no thoughts. Does this sound familiar? When these people also have no motor functions, like they can't move, then they are also paralyzed. But when they also don't answer anybody or react to pain and they can't move and have no thoughts, generally we bury them. If not for their sake, then for the insurance. As for the other part of your question, what about death due to any other reason....hmmmm.....well...is your question really, how much of the human body has to cease functioning before the brain goes too? Well, you can't live without kidneys, or a lively liver. You need a stomach of some kind...and an escape chute for what the stomach didn't want. Oh! and oxygen, you can't live without the good ole H2O. So I guess it all just matters. Well, I'm taking off now, someone wants to know that if olive oil comes from olives, what about baby oil.

Hey Sparkman,
Brain Dead is when the doctors can not detect any electrical impulses in the brain (e.g. gunshot to the head, suffocation, inoperable brain tumor) - but through machines, they keep the body "alive". (Done for transplants.)
Death, by any other means (e.g. drowning, car crash, terminal disease) the body may not be able to function even though the brain seems to function fine. The brain is trying to send signals to the organs, but the organs are damaged to the point that they can't respond. This is why those rich bastards have their heads frozen in hopes that in the future mankind can either transplant the head or create a new body for the brain.
Hope this helps,
James in San Diego
P.S. I meant to add, that in the case of some severe strokes, the brain will be dead but the body works fine!

Depends of the definition of death in that state. A human body can exist indefinitely, sometimes without life support (ventilators) without brain function. The body is technically alive...because the heart is beating, but most often that is about all the body is doing. Brain tissue starts to die after an anoxic event of around 4 minutes. The heart takes a little longer. Could be that you are talking about sudden types of death or death due to illness in which the reserves of the body are no longer able to compensate and the body dies due to organ failure. Hope this helps.

When you are brain dead you are you are still biologically and per definition alive, but you are, very simply put, completely unconscious with no brain activity. The rest of your body, heart and lounges etc, still works fine.
If you are dead, however, there is no life what so ever. All bodily functions shut down and you become th dust of the earth.
I do think though if you are brain dead it doesn't matter if they keep you alive or not. I mean, it's not like you will feel any difference.

brain dead doesn't allow your body to respond to any functions as would a normal person. the body however is functioning completeleywith full life -----death means your whole body is dead. no life in it at all. there is no blood running through your body ,no heartbeat,etc.... did you know that if you donate your body to science when you pass you get a free burial?
