These protesters are against freedom of speech. Apparently they are against any kind of speech that might challenge their beliefs. These people will never be able to develop any new ideas, because their minds are so closed. You can't be progressive, scientific or humane if you try to suppress other people's ideas or opinions.
At one point in its history, Islam was progressive, scientific and humane. Show me a Muslim country today that cherishes freedom of speech and I will show you one that practices Islam in an enlightened way.

First of all, women in Islam are very free to meet with her brothers, and sisters, and women neighbours without puting on their heads the veil.But they can't meet men wich they can marry.
She is allowed to work, to have a career, and her rights must be obeyed, unfortunately, Islam wasn't applied well, and so it is It's reputation
Example: In the former Ottoman empire, in the colonies such as Balcan region, there were Islamic Judging courts, and Christian and jewish courts.Women used to go to the Islamic Judging courts because they were respected, although they weren't muslims.
Let's return to the main question: Yes, Islam is a progresive religion, prove: Surah al Alaq's first word: Ikra(in arabic means read!, and it refers to read and learn and study)
Alaq is the congealed blood, which is the first stage of an embrio.

It seems it is no longer a religion. I have seen so many Muslims post here that Islam teaches this or teaches that. The problem is there are over a billion people on this planet who say they are Muslims but do not follow what they say are the peaceful teachings of Islam.

islam through quran is the final revelation of god to mankind and no other divine book shall follow.....let me start by saying that even if u are a parsi as your name shows pls read it from a good translated version....now let me address your question in 3 parts:
1. progressive or not....yes it is very logical and pls do not follow acts by most muslims as they do not set a good example by being extermists....preaches progressive attitude at its outset by saying that philosophy in life has to be the beginning.
2. scientific or not....the quran says philosophy of learning is most important....and that there is no problem with out a solution.....its totally researched based which unfortunately muslims have totally forgotten.
3. human or not....its the only book which emphazises on nature and natural instincts....as i said pls do not take what muslims do as a basis....they are bad followers....u prove to me any thing against nature or mankind in islam and quran and i shall change my faith.
