it is a pagan fasting ritual rehashed by Mohammad from the ancient arabs of his tribe. They fast 12 hours and feast the other 12 every day! And they call that a fast!

It's like your Christmas people give gifts and are supposed to think of the poor, but how many do? I am a converted Muslim for a while now and this is my 2nd fasting for Ramadaan. Yes in some people it does bring purity just like Catholics give something up for Lent. Every religion has their own type of fasting or sacrifice. i will tell you that of the Muslim people I have been around they are willing to put any personal differences or prejudices aside to help someone in need who is struggling. i have seen this. I also know of many Muslims that have given food or clothes off of their backs to someone in downtown Cleveland who was homeless. Last year it was cold and there was an elderly black man downtown with no coat on and it was freezing and snow was on the ground. My boyfriend and I went into the mall there and he said to the man "My brother you look like you need something, can I help you?" The man said he was freezing and he had no money to eat. We went into the mall and my boyfriend bought a cup of coffeee and a big sandwich from the deli for the man, then went outside and gave the man the coffee and sandwich and asked if he was still cold. The man said he was okay right now, but at night he had nothing to cover himself with. So my bf took off his coat and gave it to the man telling him " My brother I would not want to live with the guilt that these other people walking past will soon see for not helping a brother or sister in need." That man was so happy and his stomach was full, I felt touched that my bf was so unselfish to give his own coat because he could go to buy another one. I really saw the meaning of true unselfish love. I will add that this was not during Ramadaan either. I have seen Christians act in the same manner by donating things, but never have I seen something like this! Muslims collectively are not bad, it's just the radicals that are bad. Americans have experienced the negative in religions also. A few Catholic priests have been charged with molesting little boys, does that mean all Catholic priests are pedophiles? No! You have to look at each individual as a separate person not the whole congregation.

What, you think Ramadan is supposed to make the wealthy give you money?
It is a time of fasting and prayer. It is supposed to be a universal practice of piety, not charity.
It doesn't work, but even if it did, you would still be hungry and poor and (evidently) unable to use the spell checker.

God (there is no god) did not invent money man did, so this thing about the rich giving to the poor is a man made tradition as is all religions. Man has made money his god. If you want to give your god away(ie your money) to someone who doesn't deserve it and hasn't earned it its up to you. Nature has told us that the fittest survive it is only us humans who feel are duty bound to help the weak and the hopeless.
If nobody helps the weak and the hopeless then the world would be a much better place.

My dear friend every practice of Islam becomes a ritual when it is performed without understanding the reason behind it. Unfortunately it is the rituals that have taken precedence over practices that can actually transform characters in Islam. I guess I m to b blamed for it if I accept the performance of rituals more over practices myself.

but how many rich muslim care for poors.?
Muhammed-pbuh said --the best of the alms is that which is given by the right hand and the left hand is unaware.

what change it brought among Muslims?.
that answer can be found out if u look at muslims world-wide, u will not get an answer if u look at people who kill and protest. and how many muslims who DO NOT carry protests, who DO NOT rally, who DO NOT kill --have u met? out of 1.6 billion muslims in the world how many have u seen and met in person?

u dont have to prepare urself for a fast. u have to prepare urself to persevere and to control ur entire system -- body, mind and soul. Ramadhan is not just about fasting, its time for us to learn to keep ourselves in control. it is a time where one can learn to deal with the evil things and intentions and looking forward to being a better human being. it is a time to learn to forgive and ask for forgiveness.

Ramadhan is the time for people to better themselves in virtues of endurance, patience and forgiveness. thats what its all about. it is the time to learn to give.

as for me, there is nothing to prepare, becoz i try fasting almost every monday and thursday, supposedly the Gates to Mercy and Heavens are supposed to be open on these days. so yes i am looking forward this Ramadhan to be a better me.

IS FASTING COMPULSORY? NO. it is an obligatory fardh -- for those who can. if a person is sick, or travelling, elderly, pregnant and lactating women can skip their fasts.

QU'RAN -- Al-Baqara | 286 verses | The Cow سورة البقرة
Sura #2 | Madina
183 O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, even as it was prescribed for those before you, that ye may ward off (evil);
184 (Fast) a certain number of days; and (for) him who is sick among you, or on a journey, (the same) number of other days; and for those who can afford it there is a ransom: the feeding of a man in need - but whoso doeth good of his own accord, it is better for him: and that ye fast is better for you if ye did but know -
185 The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the Criterion (of right and wrong). And whosoever of you is present, let him fast the month, and whosoever of you is sick or on a journey, (let him fast the same) number of other days. Allah desireth for you ease; He desireth not hardship for you; and (He desireth) that ye should complete the period, and that ye should magnify Allah for having guided you, and that peradventure ye may be thankful.
