Area 51, or the Groom lake test facility on Nellis Air force Base, was a testing area for military aircraft. (mostly) . The area in Nevada where area 51 is, is pretty desolate, and isolated. It means any accidents from experimental hardware is'nt likely to hurt any civilian population. It's isolation also makes it less likely that our technology will be discovered and/or stolen by any enemies. Knowing a foe's capabilities is the first step to understanding how he can be defeated. Some claim area51 is used to hide aliens and E.T. spacecraft. I'll not go there, but some say that's a major reason for the base's secrecy.

It's used (probably) for testing top secret aircraft, but also it's very useful to have a military base that doesn't officialy exist.
It is named area 51 because of an old missle test range map that was divided into areas, area 51 is where the base is, it is no longer listed on any maps however.
The base that people call area 51 is real, you can drive up to it and get arrested, it's also surrounded by cameras, montionsensors and things like that to keep people out.

Area 51 has to do with aliens and UFO's. The American government made an agreement with ET's for their technology. The public isn't supposed to know that the "war on terror" is only a front for what's REALLY going on in Iraq!...

because the movie made it that way. I have a doubt that there even is an area 51. I really hate the way we are thinking any more. Because of the news and movies we watch. Fantasy and bias are our lives, there is not much reality anymore because of the reality shows turning that word into a circus also.
it is a shame.

b/c they do military tests there, and all nations' militaries are secretive and worried about spying.
There have been probably 100 documentary TV shows over the years about Area 51 though, so I don't know how "top secret" it is anymore.
