This Question will get a lot of chaps very angry...
I hope my answer will not!

BETTER IN WHAT WAY!!!!! I feel your question is a valid one but the phrasing leaves one struggling for a short answer, lets look at this in three parts:

1. Both UK and USA have a two tier military structure, that is we both have full time regular forces and volunteer reservists (the National Guard and the TA). Most league tables look at this proportion (regular vs reservist) to grade a nations military against its neighbours. Now, America has a much larger population and thus a much larger military...There are more bodies in the US air force then then ENTIRE UK armed forces... yet this has no bearing on the relative QUALITY OF THE TWO OF THEM, In fact when you do the math we are about even in terms of This proportion, thus you cant use this formulae to find out which is best.

So, next!

2. Technology, If I hear one more American go on about how High Tec the US is I WILL SCREAM!!!!! You get most of your best Gizmo's from us! You have the CASH and will have the Good Idea's... ITS BEEN THIS WAY SINCE WWII! We just don't follow the American mindset of putting a computer in everything. Your latest Missile system (the Ultra fast Cruise M. with real time course correction and strategic range) is a JOINT VENTURE BETWEEN LOCKHEED AND ROLLS ROYCE/BRITISH AEROSPACE! I will give a for-instance to show how High-Tec sometimes is a bad idea...

On Salisbury plain is a firing range the size of New york city, we test things that go bang there... a brit and an american rocket unit (MLRS) were both out this day testing, then the Computer in the US Launcher broke down... 3 hours later they were still broken down, we went over to ask why they didnt go to manual and were told to F. OFF as they had no idea how to do this... TO MUCH RELIANCE ON TEC!!!!!!

3. Your best Vs our Best... Our special forces are the best in the world, ask any SEAL or Delta chap to give an honest opinion on who gets butt the best and it will be the SAS every time.

In the Air its a little harder to gudge, we have great pilots but US has the best planes (at the moment!)... so its going to be close, but i suppose the US has it by a whisker.

At Sea ? Our subs have the same reputation as our special forces... DONT MESS! They are in a class of their own with the best crews in the world! Our surface units are getting a bit dated ...so the USN win on the surface and we rule below.

SO WHATS MY CHOICE ? I know i have waffling (sorry)...

There is an old addage which says that "Quantity has its own Quality"... the politico's say this is bull, they say that High Tec wins every time... Well they have missed the basic truth in war, that you must have forces to fight any and every threat: IF YOU HAVE ONE UNBEATABLE TANK IT CAN ONLY BE IN ONE PLACE AT ONE TIME! The US has more, thus it has a better chance to meet its role TO PROTECT THE HOME FOLKS AND PROJECT THE WILL OF THE NATION, this is the only question that matters! And the British military has been cut to the bone despite the fact that our international responcibilies are the same as America...

So on this basis alone i must say...

YES , STOP GLOATING YOU YANKS!

America wins... (God... that hurt to say!!!!!)

The best army is the Tutsi in Rwanda. They only fight to death no messing.

Between the USA and UK armies I say the USA is better because their soldiers are extremely more foolish than the more measured UK army. They seem to be on drugs most of the time. Look how many attrocities they commit everywhere they go supposedly to protect someone. WHo? The name is Mr and Mrs Oil

UK

USA has better technology but UK has way more experience of dealing with counter insurgencies/ terrorism after dealing with Northern Ireland. In Iraq one of the first things UK troops do in an area is foot patrols so they can gain the trust of the locals. Americans tend to stay inside armoured personnel carriers/ In thirty years or so they might work out the tactics for being an occupying force.

In a recent US exercise the army lost to the troops playing the terrorists. The "terrorists" sent fake messages on the radio while sending real messages by bicycle. Using this they lured a group of tanks into a trap and were able to "destroy" them. The powers that be then made a group of American tanks defect to the terrorist, blew them apart and called it a victory to save face.

The Americans have better technology, but for intellect, tenacity and bravery it has to be the British.

We have armed services built on hundreds of years of history (not all good mind) and a society that is outward looking. The Americans have little military history and servicemen who usually have never been out of their state let alone the country.

The American model is blow them to s**t and sod the consequences (think Fallujah), the British model integrate and understand - then when necessary be fierce.

If I had the choice between the average British soldier and the average American one - no contest, Brit every time.

Americans unfortunately, and this is a generalism, are niave, c*ck sure and armed to the teeth - a highly stupid combination.

the BRITISH army are best, no doubt about it.

when the US army started searching for osama in the mountains of afghan, who did they call upon for help?
british marines (not strictly army, but i'm trying to get a point across here), cos they're trained in mountain warfare. US asked for a small british force, compared to their massive amount of troops involved in the search.

british army has a 'hearts and minds' strategy in most theatres. it works! the americans have a much more aggressive stance.

american army - all show, no go.

brits think outside of the box

im a serving member of the british military (so i DO know what i'm talking about) and this is my PERSONAL opinion, so don't go slagging me off

We do! We being the British Army. Just think we have the SAS, Marines and paras. The SAS are the envy of every army in the world.

I have to admit the Americans have probably killed more people, but they need to learn it's the enemy they are meant to be shooting, not each oher. Friendly fire is not good. Bless 'em.
