I'm currently a college student and can only apply for boring,part-time, tedious jobs that pay minimum wage. I think most employers ask why you apply, and out of the jobs that I have applied to, I answer them bluntly "because I need the money." For example, I applied for a filing job and she asked why I applied, and I said "because I need to pay for part of my rent."

My friend told me it was the wrong answer, yet how can I fake interest for such boring jobs that pay little? I mean, how can I tell her it's my life dream to file papers? I don't understand. I thought being honest was a good thing...

I think your answer lies in looking deeper than "it's just for the money". Every life experience - positive and negative - will provide you with value later. Even the most boring jobs can teach you something, even if it's just to appreciate the really good job you'll get after your education.
Honesty is important, but take a look at the job and what can you apply? Filing is boring? Yep, but then when you own your own company someday, you'll know how to make sure your employees are skilled at filing ( and you'll really appreciate that great secretary).
I had a lot of boring jobs as a student - the worst one was doing dishes at a nursing home. Yuck! And another was folding laundry. But even those experiences taught me work ethics, and the value of dreaming while doing tedious work!

Even if you are looking for minimum wage jobs, there are some that are more interesting than others. Go for one that poses at least some interest for you, if nothing else than meeting people.

What do you think the number one thing your potential employer is looking for? Give them interesting reasons why this thing is a point of interest to you.
