I don't know about the Arabic thing and scratching their botties but I had heard many moons ago that it was a Spanish thing for nose-picking. It wasn't just for older men, though, it was for all males.
I only cut all my nails last week, so I can't even tell you if it really works (of course it does!).

Wait until you lot get old.

I play what you call keyboards.
My first priority with my ablutions is to inspect my finger nails to keep them short to protect the keys. I play a lot of Jazz.
Now 83, I am finding it very difficult to keep them short, in fact I can't and they are growing longer.
Why?
The flesh under the nail is growing higher than the finger's flesh and sometimes I make them bleed when cutting.
Years ago the ladies used to have sets of instruments to mess around with their nails, and I remember seeing them use something that pushed a part of somewhere down towards the wrist?
It could be I lack the knowledge, but I am not visiting a nail bar so I just put up with.
In case you lot are interested the ears keep growing too as does the waistline if it isn't watched.
In my case its beer but not everything grows, some parts actually diminish.
My wife doesn't do anything with her nails except cut them and I'm not asking her for advice on my changes either.
She seems to be getting masculine to a point where she wants to take my place?
Not ***** likely!
So good luck when you get there, and when you do you will understand why we moan.
Even today will look good.

The habit evolved, although I am not sure in which order, in the Far East and South America. It was originally to dole out small portions of expensive spices by merchants as these were sold in tiny units. More recently, you will notice it is a popular feature in South America for other reasons, although it still involves powder...

The young men are doing it, too.
I THINK that they are either snorting, or they are using it to pick their nose.
Whatever the reason, it seems to be some sort of aid for convenience. It is an eyesore and I wish I can just cut it off for them.

It is the only finger nail they do not bite, they would look a tad wimpish biting the little finger.
