Hmmm...good question. I know that I cannot imagine there being no God, I have tried and it just seems illogical. It's complicated to explain what I am about to explain, so please bear with me.

Upon rereading the question, I change my answer. That answer was why I believe in God, but I thought it didnt answer the question, though it does play in to an extent. God is the Creator. A creator is always around longer than the creation. Therefore, the universe is not everlasting and did have a beginning. Because there is a Creator, who is by definition eternal. Yes, I am aware you don't believe that, but keep in mind you're asking for a theist's point of view. I swear I know the answer, but putting it words is difficult. It's a catch 22 of sorts. One first must believe there is a Creator to understand this. It's so obvious, it's complicated. Were I an atheist, I could understand how someone could see this the other way around, but I am not and do not, though I do understand the arguement. Were you a theist, you would know the answer. I know this sounds "duh, you daft bint," but not everything can be so easily explained without statement of the obvious.

Personally, I can understand why someone would not believe in God, but that's just not how I view the world. So, in answer to "can you understand," I say yes, in answer to "why," I say its difficult unless one learns to see both ways.

I suppose it just depends upon the theist. I am sure the agnostic theist sees things differently than one who belongs to a religion.

Atheists have indeed appealed to notions of a universe existing endlessly into the past, having never needed to have a point of "creation". No logical fallacy was seen in this. There simply was no evidence or reason to think that the universe ever "began to exist"

We now have conclusive evidence that not only Matter and Energy, but Space and Time themselves came into being at the Big Bang. The universe DID come into being. The question then is how does one even begin accounting for its beginning if the tools of scientific explanation (Matter, Energy, Time, & Space) are not available to the skeptical thinker to begin formulating a "natural" explanation? It would seem one needs to look beyond the "natural"... perhaps supernatural? ;)

At any rate, there is likewise no reason then to think that God needed his own creator. If the being you have in mind needs one, then that being simply is not God as conceived by most theists.

Just as according to science too "Matter, energy cannot be created or Destroyed but changed", Similarly God did not create this world out of nothing. Every thing Existed.
We the souls are as eternal as God himself and so is Gods energy.
In Bhagavad Gita it is clearly stated
"Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor all these kings; nor in the future shall any of us cease to be" 2.12

In our general term, we use the word "Creation" when we actually mean "Transformation". If the transformation is a lot we say Creation.

What science does not accept that Life or Sprit is another element and is the cause of this transformation.
Though Newtons 1st law states that matter will remain in rest untill disturbed. He does not explain what is the source of this disturbing force?
The ultimate of this life or Sprit is what we call God. Though Life is found every where why does Science not take into account this life?
We have science that mater is transformation of Energy and destroying this matter releases tremendous amount of energy. Hence energy is the basis of matter.
But we have not been able to find the basis of this energy. Vedic literatures says that Life or soul is the source this energy.

But though Life is present every where, scientist will not accept it just because its mentioned in Religious scirptures.

All of creation testifies to God the creator. This universe, our bodies, the seasons, the moons, the tides, the sun, the stars are fearfully and wonderfully made. The have been set in a order that is too intricate to happen by chance. The science of medicine who gave the knowledge, the best diet for our bodies, who gave us that. The DNA who wrote that into our cells,, the heart who gave that to love with,if not the God of Love who is Love.

Open your heart and mind to TRUTH and you will understand.

The only way it makes sense to me for everything around us to have a beginning and end is if Someone outside us (and outside the jurisdiction of the laws of our universe) made it to be so.
