My entire life up to this past year went smoothly in general. I've always been a top student, a talented musician, and I've had a loving boyfriend with a few close friends. In high school I graduated 2nd out of a class of 400. I applied to 10 top universities, and I got into all of them. I've never been rejected in my life.

However, since college I've experienced the taste of failure that I just can't seem to get over. This summer I got my first job, but I got fired for my social life because my coworker told my boss that I had stoner friends. My boss fired me because she thought I'd turn to drugs too just because of my friends. This was my first job--and it was a part-time job, but it has left me scared. Then, I applied for a research position at my university, yet I was not even asked for an interview. My GPA is around a 3.7 so it's not that bad. I do not know why the professor did not even ask for an interview. So, I was rejected from this application.

I tried getting a second job, this time a cashier position, yet since I had no experience in cashiering, I was not hired. This is a third rejection.

How do I get over this? Is life full of garbage like this?

Honestly, up until college, I had never felt rejection at all, and it just feels crappy. Advice please?

Also, I recently started smoking cigarettes when I feel angry or depressed. I know it's not good, but I take walks late at night and smoke to cheer me up.

My life is not completely crumbling, but I feel it's just not like before. What to do?

Oh, I also applied for a library job for filing. This time I did get an interview, but was not hired. I think there were about 6 to 7 other applicants. What the hell is wrong with me? Life sucks.

You are growing up. Instead of using your earlier successes as a crutch, you are supposed to use them as strength and build on them as a resilient person.

It is possible that you were treated better than others as you grew up, yet you took it for granted. Develop a sense of gratitude for your benefits, and learn to give to others instead of taking all the time.

Put on a concert or two at nursing homes with your musical talent. Schedule time every week to spend with your parents or grandparents, helping them do whatever pleases them.

The real 'failure' here is your lack of ability to reach out to others. That is a major success factor in life, and as soon as you get busy on mastering it, you will become more successful at other things that involve being selected by other people..

welcome to the real world!!!
but if you are so smart, why are you applying for a job as a cashier... you may find that setting you sights so low out of fear of rejection is causing the rejection. job's like that are for people who don't have the intellegence to have a big career... if you do, then you are taking a job from someone who better deserves it and more likely needs it.

why don't you apply for graduate jobs? also why are you working part time? at your age, now it the time to be working full time and getting as high on the ladder as possible whilst you can. and if you're not really sure what career you want, then these types of jobs are perfect whilst you discover the answer to that question.

either way, you are only a failure in life if you give up on life and cry in your boots about the set backs that are just a part of it.

I just try harder. I try my best until the end. Even if I still fail, I don't make a big deal over it. I calm down and try to find a peaceful solution to failure. Sure, I'll probably be depressed over failure, but I'll find something else to try.
