The most common expression seems to be animal control officer (I have a son who is one), but animal lovers also often call them animal rescuers.

they used to be called dog catchers. now the politically corrected version is animal control officer. ya, dog catcher gets my vote.

I would have thought dog catcher. Then again, it's never happened to anyone I know.
