Dragon comes from Draconis, which in turn comes from Draco. Draco is a star constellation that stretches like a huge serpent in the sky.

It represents the serpent aka the devil and in the eastern sky two mornings beforec Jesus was born Draco was seen as the earth rotated and it looked to be dragging one thrid of the stars down to earth.

George and the Dragon is actually the archangle Michael battling the serpent.

So Dragons came to be accepted as literal. In the eastern bible times, their was a group of serpent like creatures mentioned as flying. They were known as the Sepherim and this translates as Fieries. Hence faeries. Lots of myths have their origin in truth and in some case the truhts they have their origins in are the scriptures themselves.
