A shotgun is the traditional weapon of choice, but around here we use .223 rifles and an electronic caller.

A fox is not a big animal, so a varmint rifle is fine. Some people advise using 12 gauge shotguns, I see. That is overkill, and the fox may be out of range for shotguns. They are sly beasts, so it's not easy to get a shot at one. Much depends upon the area where you hunt. I've hunted varmints on flat plains where it's common to get 300-500 yard shots. For that area, I use a .22-250 Mauser with 12X target telescope or a Mannlicher .243 with 8X scope on windy days. I've also hunted in brushy hills where one gets few shots longer than 100 yards. I have a .243 carbine without scope for that. I see we must have at least one PeTA nut to tell us how awful we are. I tell them I was named "PeTA Enemy of the Month" once. Jennifer Lopez took the title from me by wearing fur, but I'll work to retrieve it.

Depends on the range and the available cover, whats down range, etc. I would opt for the .17 HMR, .22 mag, or .22 hornet for ranges under 150 yards. I'd then opt for the .204 ruger, .223 or 22-250 for anything beyond that range. If one was in the chicken barn, then a .22 LR would be fine (actually within 100 yards too). As mentioned by others their is nothing wrong with a properly loaded 12 ga. shotgun. I would opt for #4, #2, or BB birdshot.

Where I live it's more coyotes and less fox, and it's mostly within a hundred yards so I prefer a 10/22 (.22LR) but a 12 GA. is good for close work and there's a whole line of .22 centerfires that would be good for longer range. I'm contemplating buying a .17 rem as it looks like a good cartridge for small game. good luck and good hunting

a 243 with high powed scope . but be sure law allows this . the fox is a smart cookie and wont give you a close shot but at long ranges he still knows your thare but isnt worried as much about you being so far away . if your hunting with dogs a rifle is hard to hit a fox with here we use shotgun at running target assumeing you get that close

If your calling for predators and you've been seeing a lot of fox I would use a 22 mag. or a 17 cal. Both are good out to a 100 yards or so and won't damage the hide to bad.I've predator hunted for years with the good Ole Marlin 22 mag. They are very accurate and in Expensive to shoot.Good luck with calling the Vermin in.

like everyone else its a choice of preference. under 100 yds 17 hmr, 22 lr, 22mag, or 12ga are plenty over 100 yds i would opt for a little more power. if you are using an electronic caller and want a real challenge use a bow. they are very sly critters using a blind for bow hunting would be very beneficial but not nesecary. best of luck. and dont let the peta freaks get you down. i'll bet half of the anti-animal killers are wearin leather shoes!

I would use a 12 g shotgun, or maybe grenade launcher! Why kill a fox? For sport I assume. Are we talking about chasing them with horses and having dogs to track them? Do you consume the flesh. Ask PETA. sorry for my sarcasm.
