keep in mind that cats are very independant which can make certain behaviors like not learning to sit seem like stupidity.

Having had both cats and dogs, I believe that they have different types of intelligence, rather than different amounts. Cats *are* more independent; in addition, a cat is capable of forming a problem set, which is something a dog cannot do. Dogs, on the other hand are willing to learn more commands, but both can be taught with sufficient motivation (such as FOOD). On the whole, I simply think you're comparing proverbial apples and oranges.

Depends. Dogs are "smarter" in certain ways because they, like us, are much more social animals. Dogs "work" (hunt, raise young) in packs and are better at social interaction then cats. They are much better at relating to us in the way that we do to each other, and see us as part of (and if properly trained) the leaders of, their pack.

Cats are excellent solitary hunters. Cats are more social then many people think, but do their "work" as individuals. They have better memories in certain areas and are very good at out-thinking prey as they hunt alone and by stealth instead of by cooperating with a pack as dogs in the wild will do if possible.

Bottom line, dogs have been bred over time to be very human like in their responses to the world around them. Cats, while certainly domesticated to a degree, are very much the wild and solitary hunters they always have been - and so retain the metal tools necessary to survive on their own.

Dogs are smarter when it comes with interacting with us. Cats are probably a bit smarter when it comes to taking on the world single-handedly.

The answer is Who knows? As you say the nature of the cat makes it difficult to design a cat IQ test. You can make a cat tell you "yes I understand you" and do something. When the cat doesn't do something, you don't know if it's because it didn't understand you, isn't hungry for cat treats anymore, is tired of the game or understands perfectly well what is expected of it, it's just messing with your head.
Also cats are unsuited by size to be seeing-eye cats or search and rescue cats. Dogs are used for these jobs not only because they are "smart".

Cats are great pets too, but dogs are smarter. Various breeds of dogs are trained to assist people; hunters use dogs to retrieve game, there are seeing eye dogs for the blind, drug/bomb sniffing dogs at airports, and those used to track missing persons, for example. They are also commonly used as guard dogs for businesses and private homes. Even the smallest dog can bark and alert their owner when a new person arrives at their home. Cats can be trained to attack as well, but unlike dogs they don't attack only appropriate targets, but whom ever is closest to them when they are given the command. Have you ever read the book "Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul"? It is a great book that is full of stories of dogs that have done remarkable acts including calling 911 when there was an emergency, waking their owner and assisting them out of their home when it was on fire, and alerting their owner before the onset of an epileptic seizure.

Yes.Some people think Dogs are smart because they can learn tricks and stuff. But Cats can do it too if you teach them when they're kittens. Goldfish can do tricks too!!

yes. They use parts of their brains dogs have no function of at all. This is why cats are "lighter on their feet" cause they have the ability to walk soft, dogs would not know how to do that unless trained to use that piece of mind. And it takes longer to train.

That question is comparable to " Are humans smarter than monkeys?" We are all created equal and it is how we use our God given knowledge that makes our intelligence come through.
Something to think about.
