We all experience a bit of radoactivity every now and then (X rays, just living, etc.) -- no, you aren't going to get cancer. You need much higher doses, many more times.

This worry is actually a symptom of Graves, so you are entirely in the right place right now. You just need to calm down a bit with the fear (but as I said, it's normal -- so don't feel bad about it).

As far as your milk is concerned, your body just gradually reabsorbed it, but expelled the iodine through your waste. It will not stay there and fester.

Your doctor will give you another dosage of the radiactive iodine for the removal aspect. It's not bad -- it has been a used procedure for over 20 years. You go home, rest and relax, and 3 days later are usually up and running. You will take a cute little pill for the rest of your life, 1 each day, but it is cheap and rather harmless (you really don't notice it -- just take it as you take your vitamins). Granted, there will be a lifetime of blood tests, but mine are even spaced out now every 6 months, so it's not too bad. My levels are good and I have been on the same dosage for 4 years and I'm just 38.

It's fine. There are millions of us out here. Just ask and we shall answer -- thyroid disorders are one of the MOST common issues among women.

Many people including myself have had to have there thyroid out. There is always a worse case, most do fine without it, you will most likely be put on a synthetic replacement I take synthroid.2 and do fine. I have been on this as of 1976, You will be on a replacement for the rest of your life.

i work on an epilepsey unit at my hospital, we also inject seizing patients with radio active isotopes. the amount of radiation that is injected is only enough to show up on the scan. it can linger in the breast milk and will not be a great idea to feed a little person, just because children and babies require very little to achive the desired effect. the radiation is not enough to hurt you, it will desolve harmlessly in time.

Subtotal thyroidectomy is ideal for you. There is no need to be afraid of it.
