AA works for about 5% of the people than walk through their doors. Many get worse. People quitting on their own have a 5% success rate, but those who have been exposed to AA are 4 times as likely to engage in binge drinking.
Here's some scary statistics on AA:
http://www.orange-papers.org/orange-effectiveness.html
Many people overdo when they first start drinking, especially around college age (whether or not you attend).
And they primarily drink to get drunk. About 80% of these people, according to Harvard, quit or learn to moderate on their own. It's part of growing up and taking on adult responsibilities.
Some, at this age, get caught up in AA and believe they're alcoholics and they'll be that way and have to attend meetings until they die. There are NO figures that back this up, only stories told in the rooms. Most of the people in the rooms were problem drinkers, not addicted to alcohol, but will allow themselves to be saddled with the label "alcoholic" for life.
I was an alcoholic, these days, I don't drink.

If you feel you need to ask the question, then you're in need of at least a little help. Stay aware of the government drinking guidelines - did you realise that more than three pints of weak beer for men and two for women is the daily recommended limit? (@ 21 or 14 units per week / 7days)
Our culture doesn't realise how addictive booze is. Why do you need to get drunk? At college I had a friend who was alcohol-allegic. He had more fun than any of us drunkards.

If you drink in order to get drunk, what you really need is a kick in your posterior.
An alcoholic drinks because he needs it to run his system. He gets addicted to it.
One who knows he is drinking just to get drunk, for no reason, is not an alcoholic.

an alcoholic will literally drink 24/7. they can drink so much that if someone normal drinks that much they will get alcohol poisoning, but alcoholics are used to it by that stage

I don't drink much - but I have always heard it said that if you think you need A.A., you're probably right. If in doubt, go to a meeting - what harm can it do?
