A 13 year old boy should not be doing weights as such at his age. The reason being is that he is in the development stages of his body maturing and he should develop his body fully and only consider taking up weights around the age of 16.
Regular exercise that is arobic in nature will help him to develop a toned body and not damage the muscles early. When he is fit and toned and wants to start lifting weights at 16 then he can, but he should start small and slowly and build up because he can over do it and actually prevent his muscles from developing.
Also speaking with a family doctor, a physiotherapist and a sports instructure will give you good advice as to your size, weight, Body Mas Index and advise you how to develop a body to the size and shape you want without causing injury that can harm your 13 year old in later life.

5'11" and 180lbs, you need to get a job. but yes, it's ok to go to the gym. my son has been going to the gym with me since he was 10, he is now 13. he a fullback on his junior high school football team and you can see the difference in his muscular structure and strength compared to the other kids on the team. be careful though, if you have never lift weights, you will need to start with very light weight for a while until your muscles figure out this new program you are doing. it will be real easy for you to injure yourself if you don't know what your doing. if you can, get someone to workout with you that knows what they are doing until you get the hang of it.
also, at your age, your body is going to need a lot of protein to help build muscle. go to a health food store and ask for a whey protein powder and ask how much you need to take for your age. my son takes 3 sometimes 4 servings a day. eat your beans, fish, eggs, beef, peanuts and milk. all good sources of protein. good luck and pump it up.

I am not an expert but my brother (he is slightly short) was advised not to because he was still gaining height at that age, he was told to have a good diet, brisk walk or walk with light weights and lots of stretching exercise, but he started weights after his 18th b'day. He is average height but he has a fantastic build, he is 22

you can do medium to light weights, but most kniesiologists would tell u that you should wait until you are at leas 16 before you get into serious weight training to gain muscle mass.

No as you're body hasn't stopped growing yet and you're susceptible to injury. If you are going to do weight only do the smaller ones and don't go overboard. If it starts getting too much, STOP.

I would advise you to get professional advise but if thats what you want to do then sure, why not.
Weight lifting if not done correctly (lifted correctly or if your posture is wrongly positioned) could cause harm. So Please get expert advise.
