The 60 watt recommendation is to prevent heat damage to the shade and other components of the lamp. The electrical switch and wiring of a typical lamp will easily handle a considerably larger lamp without any problems.

You can install compact flourescent lamps (CFL's) in these lamps which will use less electricity for the same light output and also run cooler than standard incandescents. For example a 28W CFl is about the same brightness as a 100W incandescent. Three-way CFL's are even available.
