He is only in the present era.
If you follow already 35 years the cycling world as I do there is no doubt, it should be Eddy Merckx as the Best Cyclist ever.
Lance specialised on the tour and had less competition than Eddy Merckx.
Merckx won 5 times the Tour but against much heavier competition and with material that can't be compared with that was used by Lance.
He won several times all cycling contests the name wort, several world championships, hour record (that stood for many year ... and on a standard bike). Fe. 5 times the Giro D'italia.
Of all the cyclist that have won at least 5 times the tour Eddy was the only that did not focused on the tour only. He simply participated every contest.
There is even a recording of Lance saying that Eddy was the greatest of all time. International press also elected him as the best of the 21th century.
I admire Lance but in all objectivity, he is second best.

Lance Armstrong is the best Tour De France cyclist-

To call him a fraud is wrong all of his blood work has been tested and retested and he has never had a positive result. They have even tested his blood from years ago.

That said- you can not call him the best cyclist ever because Lance trained for and concentrated on one race the Tour. Most other great riders train and participate in a lot more races that are held through out the year, which has not allowed them to master the Tour as Lance did. He is the first rider to solely concentrate on the Tour and develop a strategy for that particular race.

Lance Armstrong is the best cyclist Present Day.

The most Tour de France wins any other cyclist had was 5, but cyclists like Eddie Merckx, Bernard Hinault, and Miguel Indurain were great. All three won numerous other races on bikes that were not as advanced andwith training technology that was not as good as it is today against great competitiors. There is also the fact that Lance Armstrong had great team mates that helped him win.

If I had to say greatest all time it would probably be Eddie Merckx.

Eddy Merckx, a Belgian rider whose career spanned the mid 60's to 1977, is WITHOUT QUESTION the best cyclist who ever lived, and even Lance himself will tell you that!

While Lance has won seven straight Tour de France victories, he did it with a very different training style, better coaching, superior equipment, the latest technology, and the best team to support him.

While Merckx only won five Tours, he also won the Vuelta a Espana and the Giro d'Italia numerous times as well as countless other stage races and spring classics. In fact, Merckx was so dominant in the Tour de France that he often broke away from the peloton SOLO, and took ALL 3 JERSEYS and five stage wins in his very first Tour! And he did it all without carbon fiber or titanium!

The reason that Merckx failed to win his sixth TDF was that people grew bitter about him not leaving anything for the other riders to win. On his way to winning his sixth Tour a spectator jumped from the crowd on a mountain stage, hitting Eddy in the kidneys hard enough to knock him off the bike. The blood thinning medications he had to take afterward sapped his strength too much, and he lost the overall win.

See the link below for Eddy Merckx's palmares, and compare it to ANYONE else, including Lance. You'll quickly see that Merckx was by far the greatest cyclist ever.

that is hard to answer this question with the aid of fact that is particularly an open question. what's your standards once you're saying "maximum appropriate bike proprietor ever"? there is not any doubt that Lance is one in all the excellent cyclists, if in easy terms for the undeniable fact that he gained the excursion de France 7 situations, the toughest carrying journey interior the planet (or perhaps that is controversial...). although, i've got faith which you would be able to't win the excursion on your very own - you will possibly want a sturdy director, a sturdy team, sturdy motorcycles (you does no longer want your bike to break down the different degree...), or perhaps a sturdy helping paintings stress. particular, you need to be all-around - you need to be sturdy at time trials and you certainly could be sturdy in hiking. Lance is unquestionably a sturdy time trialist and he's spectacular at hiking. yet he gained the excursion 7 situations with the aid of fact he has a sturdy team director who's helluva super in attitude, he's backed by ability of an great team whose participants are as committed and centred as he become, and he demands lots from his sponsors (of the motorcycles, helmets, heck even his jerseys). Lance is an surprising bike proprietor with the aid of fact of his easy skills, his concentration, and his attitude. i'm undecided nevertheless in case you may say that he's the excellent bike proprietor EVER.

Yeah---he's definitely the BEST ( you cynics out there....name ANOTHER road biker who survived CANCER, won the Tour de France SEVEN times, is now working for TREK bikes, and yup---split with a rock star chick ALL IN ONE----) Landis faced the ax despite the chaos, and LANCE BELIEVED in him. If he had drugs and enhancers in his blood----then how did cancer get out of his SYSTEM? Read the book "It's Not About the Bike" ---O ye of little faith----find out and YOU"LL GET THE WHOLE IDEA.

I would think so, he has won more tour DE France titles than any one else. What would it take to prove otherwise?
