Knowing that you have bipolar disorder is the first step to feeling better. The intense highs of a manic episode can be exciting, fun, euphoric, although this is when illegal acts and immoral acts that you probably wouldn't otherwise do take place. This can ruin friendships, relationships, and also land you in trouble with the law. The lows of a depressive episode are just as intense, if not more-so, which is the difficult part. During these episodes, you may feel helpless, alone, and overwhelmed by sadness; perhaps even suicidal. I have always leaned towards finding treatments that do not involve the use of medications such as psychatropic medications, because I feel that too many people are misdiagnosed and given these drugs when they do not actually need them. The problem with this is that the drugs have a long-lasting, sometimes irreversible effect on your brain which also means that they are likely to permanently change your personality and who you are. This is desireable IF THE DIAGNOSIS IS CORRECT! However, as I stated earlier, I believe that the chemistry of our brains needs much more study and without a proper understanding of the actual causes of such illnesses as bipolar disorder as well as a more concrete way to test for such illnesses, that too many doctors are quickly handing troubled patients so-called "miracle pills" to solve their problems rather than finding the actual cause of the emotional turmoil and teaching people useable coping skills to combat their issues.

Some doctors believe that everyone is MD to a degree. We all have highs and lows, mood swings, but most often with less severity. You could say that many successful people are MD, most of our Presidents (high risk behavior, preoccupation with sex). Its when the judgment starts to become impaired is the problem, and not thinking or caring about the consequences of walking naked in the middle of the street at night in traffic. Very difficult to treat. Who would want to takes meds to come down from a natural cocaine high? See the rub?

you set an example for everyone else to believe that they are happy or "not as bad". But it is truly only as bad as YOU choose to make it. If you want it to be tragic, it will be. If you want it to be great, it will be. Your mind is the most powerful tool at your hands and ready to be used.

There's probably a lot of happy people around you. (If there isn't, pretend there are) I truly believe that some people in this world are here to be martyrs. We suffer in some way that most people don't so that others may be happy and don't have to go through the suffering. It sucks though.

I find the whole idea of "manic depression" a bit silly,i have really intense ups and downs but i dont think human beings are suppose to just run on one regulated even/leveled mood.

Some people are just more senstive than others and have more intense mood swings,I think we are all multifaceted and varigated in our emotions and should stop trying to 'normalise' and 'even' everything out.

why would you wonder? i suppose it would be the ability to become happy quickly, but that usaully isn't under their control and it can get out of hand. I don't really think there is anything good about it.
