everyday i fill her bowl up with fresh water, most of the time filtered water. for the last week, several times she has flipped it completely over, and is very thirsty when i get home. i know she loves running water, specifically the bathtub and faucet, but she has never had problems with her water bowl until recently. she is about 8-9 months old, and during the day she is in my room while i am gone. tonight when i got home, her bowl was knocked over, so i gave her some more water and she was very thirsty, but after a few seconds she dumped it again. help. i am worried about her during the day cause i am gone anywhere from 8-14 hours sometimes.

Maybe she doesn't realise water is in it, or can't get to it?
You could also try buying her another bowl that can't be knocked over, like a stainless steel one. Hope this helps! xx

one of my cats - about the same age as yours - used to do that all the time too (knocking or flipping the water bowl completely over and spilling all the water). I watched Cato do that several times and figured that the cat just liked playing with the water in the bowl like that - flipping the bowl and watching the water spill out. I solved the problem by getting a bowl that is nearly impossible to flip over with a cat's paw. The bowl, which cost me all of $1.00 at a local Dollar Store is wider at the bottom that it is at the top. Then I placed this bowl on top of a smooth surface so the bottom will not have any purchase as would happen when left on the carpet. Presto! Cato couldn't flip the bowl over and either got tired of trying or frustrated. So, now, the water stays in the bowl uless the cats have completely drank it up (which is everyday).

Try it - may work for your mischievious kitty too.

I agree with some of the other posters that you should secure the bowl so that it cannot be tipped over. Since she likes running water, you might also consider getting a pet fountain that recirculates and filters water. I got one for my cats, and they have quit jumping on the kitchen cabinets to get at the faucet (at least, most of the time...)

I notice my cat does the same sometimes, she is a young cat too and I see her playing with her bowl, sometimes she knocks it over, I think she likes the sight of water moving, she stares at it until it stops, cats are very attracted to stuff moving, my cat also knocks her bowl over on purpose and then lays down on the water, I live in California so I assume she is trying to cool off.

I suggest you get her toys that move so she can get distracted and they sell water fountains for cats online, they look like rainfalls they are cool and heavy, even if she wants to play with water she won't be able to knock over the whole thing (one can only hope.)

This one is very unusual! Until/unless asking the advice of a vet, have you considered STABLIZING the bowl in some way that she cannot knock it over? That's the only option I can think of at the moment. Consider also, leaving your cat for as long as 8-14 hours can distress her sufficiently to motivate curious behavior, that can continue even when you get home! Some cats get lonely to the point of neurosis. Would you consider another cat companion--if acceptable to both of you?

I think Anna gave some pretty good advice but I had the same problem so I bought my cat one of those water fountains. She loved it but kept scooting it across the floor causing it to unplug. Once she actually knocked it over. Good Luck

Buy a dog sized water "coolers" at wal-mart. They look like coolers but they don't cool water down or anything and they are a good price.

It would be impossible for your cat to knock it down since it's heavy. Also you don't have to worry about filling it up for weeks, plus if your cat see's it fill up like a running faucet it might encourage it to drink from it.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

EDIT: This might help as well.

Any pet food store will sell animal dishes with a wide or weighted bottom so they can't turn them over. If she's still a kitten she just might be playing with the dish to entertain herself. She probably thinks it's funny because or the way it turns over. Leave her with some toys while you're gone, that might help keep her from getting bored while you're gone.

I think that it is because she is board we had one of those 2 litter bottle waterers and the cat that I use to have would drink until she would make it glug and i always thought that it was because she liked the cause and effect. may be you could get one of those kind of waters or may be you could get her some toys to play with while you are not home
