So about 2 weeks ago I was playing softball and I was wearing running shoes and I missed the softball and it came a crashing down on my big toe, HURT like a mutha at the time and I had a problem walking on it for like a week, and it started to turn purple, and a few days ago I was examining it and trying to clean some sand from it and accidently punctures the skin under the nail and then all this fluid came out, not like a puss fluid, but it was light red in color... anyhow its pretty much detached itself from the skin of the nailbed and its attached only by the base where the cuticle is and around the outer edges of the nailbed.
Should I pull it off? or should I wait? should I bandage my bigtoe to keep the nail attached to buy time for another nail to grow under the dead one? HELP!!! Ive never had this happen and Its grossing me out.

Don't Pull It Out! Under your toenail is very vascular (lots of veins and vessels) So what that means is it can bleed a lot and fast. If your toenail is still attached to the skin even just a little, yanking it out could rip the skin and lots of those little veins and cause you to bleed pretty badly. The pink fluid was a mixture of blood and puss that had collected under the skin. Just cut down the part of the nail that is already lifted from the skin and wait for the rest to shed off on it's own. Avoid any kind of pulling, snagging etc.

No do not pull it off. Tape it in place, and keep it clean, it will fall off on its own. Then you can still apply the tape till new one is mature enough and looks like the old one. The area may be still tender and the fresh nail may not have enough density yet. Some people may pull it of but that can cause the row tissues to be exposed and that little area may get infected. If that happens then it is bad news all over.

If U can pull it off with no pain or blood, then go ahead and pull it off. If there is still a pretty good connection at the cuticle, then clean it as best as possible, slap a little antibiotic ointment on there and bandage it lightly. If the connection is still fairly strong, it's probably best to give it a little more time to fall off itself.
I have had this happen several times and I always pull it off as soon as I can. Mine have always grown back fine.

I used to slam my fingers in the door alot as a child and I used to loose a fingernail. My doctor
told me to soak it in warm water and betadine
solution every day.And not to pull ever.It will
fall off on it's own and after it does use neosporin three times a day.You may put a bandage over it after it falls off.

the best thing you could do is leave it alone to fall off by itself so when the new one grows back it would have a natural look and not deformed in a anyway

Keep the toe bandaged and let the nail drop out on it's own.

I would not pull it off, you could damage the cuticle, and that could cause problems growing the new nail. Just let it fall off and it can heal that way.. Ouch
