A friend from work brought up a good point for every hour of sleep you get you can "stay up" 2 hours. So 8 hours sleep means 16 hours awake which is 24 hours!!! (ie one day) wow. I think America's Obese problem really is a "sleep" problem. Your body doesn't funtion properly or repair fully if you don't get enough sleep, so you'll look older, die sooner and get fatter! ACK!

A person that is in great health, watches what they eat to maintain a well balanced diet, exercises 4-6 days a week, and has little to no stress in their life, only needs 4 hours sleep every 24. The 4 hours don't even have to be all at once, 2 hours here another 1 later, two 30 minute naps and the human body will function great. A person that is not in shape, doesn't exercise, eats what ever they like when ever they like, is under constant stress needs much more sleep than someone who takes care of their body, mind, and soul.

There were studies done in the late 60's early 70's where hundreds of subject were housed in and underground facility. All references to time were removed, no clocks, tv, radio, phone...
each person had their own sleeping quarters with complete control of the lights. The common areas always had lights on. They were given many thing to do during their waking hours, books, games, group and individual projects. They were allowed to sleep any time they felt tired and in need of sleep. Each person was allowed to eat what ever they wanted when ever they wanted. Each persons sleep time was carefully measured. After a few weeks the ones that were healthy both emotionally and physically fell into a pattern of only sleeping 4 hours every 24. The ones that were unhealthy slept many more hours, some upward of 16 hours every 24.

So to answer your question, it depends on the person and how much they care about themselves.

I only wish that I could sleep that long. I used to until I had kids, now they seem to think that I don't need to sleep, and I am lucky to get 3 to 4 hours... here it is 2:00 am, and what am I doing.. sitting here on the computer, and I will have to be up by 5:30/6:00 for a feeding... boy how I miss sleep

Everyone seems to think you are a pus*y if you insist on getting eight hours of sleep. However Americans seem to be pretty unhealthy in general (can anyone say obesity epidemic?) so why listen to them? I am only 28, and I go to bed at 9:30 usually. I know maybe one other person my age who goes to bed at this time. I wake up some days at 4:45 (to work out) and other days at 5:30. So I get close to eight per day. One thing is for sure though, sleeping less DOES NOT make you a better worker.

I never sleep for more than 8 hrs. It's up to you to decide how much sleep you need depending on your life style, body mechanism and work.Don't care what Americans think or believe. If you are a hard physical worker, yes, minimum 8 hrs is required to be healthy. But if you're a passive worker who has enough time to relax your mind and body during the day for instance a yoga instructor or a spiritual meditation guru(!!)3/4 hrs can be equally healthy.

Its not a matter of being cool..,some people need 8-11 hours of sleep, others do not and function fine.Is this another way of running down americans???Some of us would rather do something with our lives than to sleep it away.Oh I usually get 6-7 hours of sleep, thats all I need,if i get more I get lazy.
