You did not mention the style of the house. lol Is it a Craftsman, Tudor, Victorian, Country, New England what??? Hard to give ideas with just dozens of styles of homes or even a website. lol
ADDITIONAL:
Now that you have added Craftsman.....Just type in Craftsman house in Google. The Crastman houses were built during the Arts and Crafts Era in American and the furniture etc. was designed by Gustav Stickley. Look him up to and you will get plenty of ideas. Tiffany was also designing in this era.

I think it's not true about "grandfathered in" being null due to transfer or ownership if the old situation is still standing. For example: " According to the "Interstate Highway Act" private businesses are not allowed at rest areas along interstates. However, private businesses that began operations prior to January 1, 1960 were allowed to continue operation indefinitely." In the previous example it doesn't matter who is the owner as long as the original private business entity is still the original one; if they close the business and try to open a new one then they would have to move. In your case unless the notice was given by a court of law then it has no legal value; just call the police if they try to touch anything. If he want to do anything he most take tha case to a court of law and let the judge decide. Also try to find out how it is "Easement rights" in your jurisdiction. "Easement rights" basically say that you earn right of use for continous use after several years.

A friend of mine just bought a craftsman sytyle home. She also aquired the original blue prints to the home. Her endeavor is to resore the house to original design.
Because out door design was minimal....use accent lighting, low shrub and singular color for perenial plants...(which means change them by the season.)
Apparently to her designer it is all about minimalism in color. Pull on oriental floral design...(what ever that means),
There are many designs to help with craftsman or to modern homes.
If you can track down the original plans for your home...my friend got them through her contracter.
