How do you tell when your hen is going to start laying?

You'll see it lay a few really, really tiny eggs...about the size of songbird eggs. When you see those, then she's getting ready to lay.

If the hen has just hatched this year...then don't expect any eggs until next spring or summer...it takes close to a year for them to really get into egg laying mode. It might be sooner, but with winter coming it takes longer because chickens lay eggs in response to how much light they are exposed to. Winter has shorter days, therefore less light and less eggs.

Of course, if you're in the Southern hemisphere...then you should expect eggs this summer.

My hens usually get a little moody about 3 days before they start laying eggs. They also go through "labor pains", which start about 2-3 days before they lay their eggs.

I read somewhere that you can judge by the distance between their "hip" bones, the ones that jut out at the rear on either side of her cloaca. It was something like three or four inches for a regular sized hen (not pygmy or anything). any smaller and it is still too young.
