According to the rules of etiquette, when you leave the table after dinner, you leave you napkin on your chair. I recently had dinner at a very nice restaurant. However, the restaurant has booths. If I leave my napkin on the seat, it will leave the person who has to slide out after me in the uncomfortable position of having to maneuver around my napkin. So, where do I put it?

Actually some VERY nice restaurants have booths. I think maybe it's a geographic thing. I didn't really find it when I lived on the East Coast, but in Southern California it's very common.

Besides, as my mother would point out, using good manners is always appropriate.

Wow,
Someone who actually cares. Anyone who is blessed to be in your company ought to take note. Put your napkin on the table when you get up to leave. Trust me, you are a very special person to care this much about others around you to not interfere with their dining experience. It's ok to gracefully place your napkin on the table after all your party has stood up and left the table. Don't sweat it!

I'd just fold it up into, say, quarters (with any dirty part tucked inside) and leave it on the edge of the table or somewhere other than on the plate.

I don't know if this is formal etiquette, but these days some of those rules have been relaxed. There are probably a lot of people who leave the napkins on the table.

Besides, it seems to me that no matter how nice the restaurant is if the seating is in booths its probably not all that formal.

You know...some people are just rude (some of the comments)!!!

It is correct upper scale restaurants won't have booths. You leave it in your seat....or in a booth you fold it and out it by your plate.

properly you're meant to slightly lean into your foodstuff, so in case you drop some thing it will maximum likely be on your lap. it may also be to strive against that undesirable habit human beings have of wiping their fingers on their pants.

Tuck into the neck of your blouse, then you don't have to worry about where to put it.
