Chick is a female, one of many slang terms based on a female of a species, in this case a bird. Sometimes it reveals more about the state of mind of the user than the one referred to. So, a quail, chickadee,or other designation of a wild bird would indicate that one is free, but may be prey for some sport or predator. I don't particularly care for euphemisms, but I'm a guy from an earlier time who was taught that women were to be respected.

I use chick as a general term, and I have been called sexist for using it.

I believe the spanish word for girl is chica, so perhaps it is an English borrowing from spanish.

It is a slang word, so I wouldn't use it in formal situations, but I don't think it is sexist or offensive.

I had an argument with a friend of my sisters who critisiced me for calling her a 'chick' when I asked why she said because it was 'deconstructive' when i asked her what that meant she did not know. In the meantime she called her friends chicks too.

Some may not like it, but I think it is harmless

PS: I wouldn't call you 'chick' like a pronoun though, I use it as a general non specific third person word for girl or woman
