why could he not use the Crusades or the Inquisition as an example to put his point across that using violence for religious ends is evil?

why do you guys keep saying that "he was only quoting someone else"? Since when is it justified to insult someone using words borrowed from another?

since when is protesting against bigoted insults the exclusive right of the Christians? is freedom and democracy OK as long as Muslims don't use that freedom and democracy that shows you in a poor light?

thank you for all the great hate speeches people!! you're truly proving what Muslims have been saying all along. that you are a hateful, violent and ignorant bunch who will kill and invade anyone who doesn't agree with a difference of opinion.

your venom is not surprising. but your ignorance is astounding.

the question still stands.

any reasonable, well thought out, respectful answers dear educated, peace-loving, democratic Christians?

yes i don't agree with the pope.......that was disrespectfull.......

i mean we have some respect for christians in our relegion....we call them people of the book....we believe in jesus and mary...and respect them greatly and do not deny their existince...in quran its mentioned that christians hold nice feelings for muslims and they are so easy and down to earth....it also mentions some christians who helped islam and supported it......because there is great resemblence between both religions and because christians are taught to love others in their religion....

but i dont know why this is happening now......all this hate....we need some help.....

Why do muslims keep bringing up the crusades, as if there was only Christians at fault then. Did the Arabs not attack Jerusalem, the holy city for Christians? And do muslims not continually keep over and over keep bringing up every single thing that Christians have ever done,to prove how evil we are. Why not just admit it, what the Pope said was true when it was first said, and continues to be true.Nothing good has come out of Islam. And where exactly is the freedom and democracy for islam's people? You are forced to obey your religious leaders or are tortured and killed. Don't go abusing other people's speeches as long as you allow your so called peaceful leaders to call Jihad on anyone who disagrees with them. Clean your own house before you start on others'.You want the Pope tp apologise better, Step up there sonny, tell YOUR religious leaders to shut up.

Iam not a Catholic, nor a 'pope lover' least not this one nor am I a real big Christian however for what they stand for for what their leaders around the world say repeatedly(today, yesterday, last week and recent years, not stated in some distant past) the muslims are camel dung as far as Iam concerned.
this statement may upset some muslims to bad this is America I have my constitutional rights.
forget about the popes quote the actions by the muslims only show the ancient text true.

At the moment, perhaps it would have been wiser to use a different example, but I still don't think it was actually wrong. I read your insulting comments about Christians, but surely if you don't want Christians to judge all Muslims by the appalling actions of a few terrorists, you shouldn't be judgemental yourself and make generalisations about all Christians. Or, do you think that you have the right to judge us, but we don't have the right to judge you? It sounds like it, but that seems to be exactly what you are complaining about in your question, the unequal treatment, or are you happy for that to continue, providing you benefit from it?

The Pope is obliged to speak the truth and defend the church and faith of Jesus Christ. By the way, what happened to the Christian Byzantine empire that once stretched across all lands bordering the Mediterranean Sea? The Byzantine empire was repeatedly attacked and ultimately completely overrun by Muslims. It seems that the Byzantine emperor quoted by the Pope was right after all. It seems a bit unbalanced that historically the Muslims invaded all of the Mediterranean basin to convert by the sword and now they lament that the Crusaders did the same to them, albeit a lot less successfully.

What the pope quoted about the muslims is true and they just can't handle it. Not to say all muslims are fire bombing extremists, but some definitely are. Yeah you're right the crusades were brutal and totally unchristian, but the muslim fundamentalists are the ones causing the problems right now. It's not a bigoted insult, it's just straight talk.

In a free society: we speak, discuss, analyze, publicize, disagree or agree, and let it go at some point after all opinions are expressed. In a totalitarian society: you are allowed to protest only at the discretion of your government and only for dramatic displays of propaganda support, you kill those who don't agree or just to make a point or even just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. I know this may shock you but come talk to me when you practice what you preach. When was the last time a radical Muslim apologized for even ONE atrocity. Get real!!! Your ways are not equal. You tend only to cast the first stone and come across as mindless parrots. Stop and think about it. Mohammad managed in 25 years of hate to influence the rational thought of so many people who seem to take comfort in the convenience of never having to think for themselves again. Again, get over it and find something worthwhile to think about.

Because the Crusades and the Inquisition is not slaughtering Christians by the thousands in Sudan in 2006, or executing innocent people for converting to Catholicism. Muslems are violent and unreasonable and do that in the name of Allah. This cannot be the will or the work of Allah. Face it.

The Pope has cleverly forced all of Islam to examine the infidelity of those who spit in Allah's face with violence and unreasonableness.

Its too bad you can only read what you want to read, and ignore what the Pope was really saying. If "Allah" can be unreasonable, he cannot be Allah. Many Muslems are in apostasy to Islam just as they were in the 13th century, and so is every Muslem who uses violence, and state sponsored persecution, in the name of Allah.

What the Pope actually said at the university in Germany has been published in many Islamic newspapers. Here is is for your convenience: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/speeches/2006/september/documents/hf_ben-xvi_spe_20060912_university-regensburg_en.html

If Muslem leaders insist that Allah can be unreasonable because he is Allah, then dialogue with Muslems is impossible. That is the main issue. That is the infidelity and apostasy of Islam that Muslems must be willing to remove, because violence is contrary to Allah.

I heard that, since the Pope's controversial remarks, a nun was murdered in Africa. So, maybe he was right about violent Muslims.
