Any discovery or finding that changes or abrogates or negates the earlier notions and sets thinking on a different footing is supposed to be groundbreaking.Suppose some scientists(A. B. C. D) worked on a gene and concluded that there was no non-transcribed segment in it. Later on, another scientist(N) found this gene to have a non-transcribed segment, to the dismay of the previously published works.Again these scientists(A. B. C. D) work hard in an attempt to substantiate their work. But as they get on with it they find that they were wrong in the first place and the finding that the gene has a non-transcribed region is correct. The scientist(N) who said for the first time that the gene has a non-transcribed region has done a groundbreaking work.

Groundbreaking is a traditional ceremony in many cultures that celebrates the first day of construction for a building or other project. Such ceremonies are often attended by dignitaries such as politicians and businessmen. The actual shovel used during the actual groundbreaking is often a special ceremonial shovel meant to be saved for subsequent display. Commemorative information may be subsequently engraved on the shovel.
In some places, clergy may also provide blessings.

"Groundbreaking" can have many different meanings. It can be an event...the groundbreaking of a new building, which can be ceremonious and refers to the first shovels of dirt dug towards getting the foundation established. It can refer to the basis of a whole new way of thought...i.e...groundbreaking research that changes the way that people thought about a particular method or cure or thoery of how to do things...it usually refers to some thing that is so profound that it is expected to be the basis for and to spawn a better way to do something.
