Well mine is naturally blond but it is so many different shades, I even it up with a color shampoo. Never had a problem and I've been doing it for years, on and off.

Coloring ones hair is fine to do and rather simple. However if they wish to go more then a shade darker or lighter then their hair color they should have it done at a salon other wise it will not turn out correctly, its not going to cause it to fall out.

It's cheaper and easier, quicker. But do it only if you want to make a subtle change to your hair. If you have really dark hair and want to go blonde, go to a professional. If you're a redhead, no matter what, go to a professional.

I don't think you should ever color your own hair. That's why we have professionals, and it's worth every penny.

It's not that they think it's okay... it's that it's cheaper... and faster, and conforms better to their time and schedule. Some people are so pressed for time these days... that they have to microwave their poptarts.
