Sun? Hell no! Many moslems would go blind staring at the sun!
Star? Maybe they started by looking at the sun, then after they burnt their retinas, them moslems tried to look at the stars but after looking at the sun for the whole day, they couldnt see the stars.
Comet? Ditto the sun staring part, their eyes couldnt focus on a moving object.
So the last available thing to depend on was the moon as it was bigger than the stars, not moving like a comet and does not burn their eyes like the sun.

The Muslim calendar is based on a lunar method. Judging by the sun would offset their years and Ramadahn would never be in the same week, let alone day. They cant use stars or comets either becuase the stars cannot help us much with time, and there is no comet we know of that is regular enough on a yearly basis.

sun - big star moon - earth's only natural satellite and the 5th largest satellite comet - A comet is a Small Solar System Body that orbits the Sun star - is a massive, luminous ball of plasma that is held together by its own gravity. The nearest star to Earth is the Sun, which is the source of most of the energy on Earth. Other stars are visible in the night sky, when they are not outshone by the Sun.

Most traditional festivals/activities in the past were based upon the lunar calendar.
The moon has significant effect on timings on the earth, as any woman can tell you!.
Its only when the Christian ideas were introduced that we started to operate on the sun to determine time.
Almost all of the Chrsitain festivals were origanally festivals based on the moon, as practiced by Pagans. They were then 'borrowed', and adapted, in an attempt to persuade Pagans to become Christian.
