I was married to my American husband for over 10 years living happily in my country in Europe. The only reason we decided to move to the US was simply for the kids, which have both citizen ships. We wanted to make sure they get the education from both sides of the world to open all possible doors for them.
I am constantly being accused of marrying simply for the green card.
On the other hand, if I wanted to get my American citizenship, I could have done so long time ago. Also I could have applied for my green card a lot sooner that I did.
We will celebrate our 21st anniversary in November....doesn't that give the message that it was love, and no other reason?
Besides, as soon as our youngest is done with school, we will move back to Europe...because this is where I belong.

for natureutt78:
my husband married me overseas, and lived there with me for over a decade.
And, because he knows how much it means to me, will move back there with me after our youngest graduated HS in 2009. Thanks, the world needs more people like you.

helo pilot:
There are jobs in my country, besides, by having the education from the US as well as their European side opens up possibilities all over the world.
There are only 2 ristrictions in the dual citizenship:
the US won't honor the European one and vice versa.
What ever other country they want to enter, they can pick and choose the passport they want to use. Sweet, ain;t it?

Hi Inge, welcome to the U.S(very belatedly). It was Bunt who said that to you and she says stuff to everyone who is not a pro-illegal(and probably some who are). She's just mad because she's illegal. If you are happy and in love with your husband, tell them all to shove it. Congratulations on your 21 years of marriage, it is harder work to keep a marriage together than some give you credit for.

just an opinion why have your grow up children move back to your country what possible experience will they gain by it other then no jobs or A very low paying one as for your green card had you applied years ago it would have been futile once absent from the states over 12 months it voided and citizenship requires 5 full yrs of residency congratulation i feel that you did marry for love and God bless you both forget the jealous imbeciles that taunt you you area blessing to have in my country

Well, to answer your question, I don't assume that an immigrant marries an American for a green card. Sure, it happens - we all know it, however, people also fall in love and marry for all the right reasons too. In fact, I have a friend who met his wife overseas and he actuallyed moved to her country and married her there! People who say you married for a green card are narrowminded and just playing on sterotypes. Just let it go - it's really their problem, not yours.

It's just a stereotype brought on by the media.
Like the episode of Will and Grace where Rosa gets married to the gay Jack so she can stay in the US.
There are some countries, like Japan, where you can't have two citizenships, and that's sucks because oen of the spouses has to choose.

Congratulations on your 21 years of marriage! :) That alone should be proof of your true intentions. If someone isn't convinced, remind them of your children for whom you obviously care very much.
To answer your question, I think that the assumption comes from the fact that there ARE so many couples who get married just so that they CAN get that green card. Keep in mind, too, that those are the ones we hear about the most. We don't always hear about happy endings like yours.

I think this is because from personal experience on both coasts in rural and urban areas I have noticed that Americans tend to think the worst of people without judging them. What you are talking about may also be because of the rising amount of illegal immigrants coming into our country.

congratulations on your 21 anniversary. some don't marry for love. i know a man that was going to marry for money. he had second thoughts about it. he didn't want to go to jail if they got busted. some people will marry just to help them get American citizenship. your an exception.

Sadly enough, many immigrants gain Citizenship that way. I don't mind so much, as long as they are prepared to embrace our country and our culture as their own.....but it is an assumption that most people make and it's not fair. To me, as long as they become legal resident or citizens and pay taxes and abide by our rules....more power to them!
