That is just the way catholics are they are into the traditions. I bet if he did wear a tee and jeans that would be so scandalis and he would not be a pope any more.

All that matters is one's true beliefs and feelings. If one believes in God and in what the Bible teaches, one will go to Heaven. If one believes these, it is irrelevant what one wears, how often one goes to church (if at all), etc.
The problem is that so many people believe that these rituals (communion, confession, etc) are a means to salvation, but in fact they can only serve as reminders of what a true Christian believes.
These ceremonies and rituals are greatly over-emphasized compared to what is more important, self-reflection.

Same reason even zen masters in monasteries do it -- the clothing and rituals are symbolic and are supposed to be part of the reflection of the sacredness of what's being presented. Although zen emphasizes the ordinariness of things and doesn't promote spiritual hierarchy, it also understands the mechanism of ritual and symbolism.

They wear dresses by tradition. Most early Christians were, well, you know, "odd."
Why do you think they were persecuted and preferred male company? Paul spoke harshly against men having relationships with women.
