ICE is an acronym for In Case Of Emergency. If you are found unconscious and you have a cell phone, emergency personnel are trained to look for ways of contacting members of your family. One thing they look for is the ICE prefacing entry's in your cell's phone book. This came from the bombings in London a few years back. What you do is you prefix a few of your entry's like 'ICE Mom 555-0807' and 'ICE Bill 555-8845'. The police or paramedics would then know that these are the numbers you wanted called if there is a problem.
How many people do this?

I personnally do not do it, though it is a good idea.
As an ex-medic myself i have yet to come across people who have such prefix. Though the system down here is pretty much intergrated and once a serious case is at hand there is seldom time to contact family members of victims during transportation till they are in the hospital, where the system pulls out previous record or the police notifies their parents via the victims id card.
Another point to note is that there are handphones that have security features that require passwords to be used to unlock the handphones and different methods of putting into entries as seen in some of the replies. In a life and death situation where every sec counts finding/guessing mum/dad/mother/father/home or which different prefix of ICE entry was used can be "costly", unless of course if its just a case of a minor fainting spell or a stable case.

I'm a paramedic, and honestly, when I'm treating a patient that is too injured to tell me her name, the last thing I'm going to do is go through her cell phone contacts! I'm too busy trying to save her life.
It might be useful for hospital staff, though, since they have more time.
Hope this helps!
