To what degree does it affect their life?

I used to. It did not affects his life very much. He really only had the impulse to swear when he was nervous, which I think is the case with most people who have the syndrome. But when he was young, his parents taught him to automatically and quietly replace swear words with a nonsense word. It's a little weird the first time you hear it, but I don't think it affected his life that much.

I knew two people with tourette's. The young man was of a very high IQ he was shy and withdrawn and he to appeared to have the "attacks" when he was nervous or stressed ( which was most of the time )

The young girl I knew went to school with my son and my goodness she was a beautiful little thing .. When her 'attacks" started her parents pulled her from school and basicly hid her from her friends .. the really kept her sedated .. saw her months after and god did it change her ... and not for the best either

All the Best

I also knew a person with Tourette's. The only difference is that Carl was mentally retarded. I don't remember the swearing because I was little at the time. One thing I do remember was that he was FAST! He was one of the fastest runners I believe I have ever seen with my own two eyes. Carl competed in Special Olympics and had several medals. Miss you Carl!
