What is being talked about in that particular passage is the type of person who praises God for the sake of being seen by others and therefore respected as a man/woman of God.

In their heart they are craving attention from other humans and respect. They have no relationship with God other than to impress others around them who do have relationships with God.

That being said, if you are all alone and praising and praying to God, there is no one to impress. All your attention can be and should be focused on God. It is very important to remember that God sees what is in your heart, not what shows on the outside.

I was once told, that if we change what we think on the inside, it will show on the outside. If we change what we think on the outside, it cannot get inside.

What you are talking about is when the Publican got up and prayed to show off, and the other man beat on his chest saying he was a sinner. God wants us to praise Him all the time, but He don't want us showing off, and saying look at me. He wants us to be humble. He hears every prayer we pray. He answers every prayer we pray. It may not be what we wanted, but He does answer them. If He gave us everything we prayed for we would not need Him. He knows what is best for each person. Take care and may God Bless you.

I don't know exactly where in the Bible that is, but I know what you're talking about. He's saying don't go out in the streets like hypocrites, shouting your prayers so everyone will hear you and think of highly of you. Instead go into private, alone, one on one with God and pray. Spend time with Him, get to know Him. That's it :)

Matthew 6:

Teaching about Prayer and Fasting
5"And now about prayer. When you pray, don't be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. I assure you, that is all the reward they will ever get. 6But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father secretly. Then your Father, who knows all secrets, will reward you.
7"When you pray, don't babble on and on as people of other religions do. They think their prayers are answered only by repeating their words again and again. 8Don't be like them, because your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him! 9Pray like this:

Prayer in public could be done to 'show off' not to commune with God
Pray always in worship of God

Be encouraged

I think Jesus was speaking of the Pharisees that were praying basically to have people say, 'look at those men of God aren't they so spiritual.' The Pharisees were praying for attention, not because they desired to speak with their loving Father in heaven. I pray all the time during the day. I pray silently or out loud. Hope this helps.

The writer was speaking about an individual who was praying aloud so that others would perceive him as being pious. He was not sincere in his prayer. Public praise of God is a sweet aroma to Him when offered from a sincere heart.

Matthew 6:5-8

So as to resist the temptation to be seen a certain way in the eyes of men. Because many people are prey to pride and like to look pious, honorable, and noble--thereby making their prayers meaningless.

If you pray in private, God knows that you are praying for one reason alone: because you want to talk to him. God loves the prayers of the humble.

I think the reason is to be sure you are praying for prayer's sake alone. If you are over the top in church or out around town, you might be showing off for others, like trying to make yourself look super-devout so others will look up to you. God doesn't like a show-off.

It was talking about hypocrites who stand on the street corners
and pray because they want men to see them.
To put it simply. 80 percent of people only care enough about
God, to cover their butts in case there is a God, or to make
THEMSELVES look good. It's UGLY. AND GOD DON'T LIKE UGLY!
