families live without power, and other services. The US military took over this palace soon after they invaded and have been there since. This palace, as well as about 70 other palaces belong to the Iraqi people, and would be better served by providing housing for some of Iraq's most desperate people. The Green Zone palace has clean running water, air conditioning, pools, and other amenities, things some Iraqis only dream of.
No wonder they want the US Out. Amongst other things, the Iraqis look at us as though we are common thieves.

It was a QUESTION. That's all. Some of you are so rude. But anyway, this is a question and answer forum. It is not a lecture hall, a Senate Hearing, nor is the subject matter accurate fodder for a term paper or a thesis. So just take it easy. I know some of you have family in the military. But you see. I do also.
And....I have heard some things maybe I wasn't supposed to hear....

Hayesfam. I asked a legitimate question. It was NOT intended to start an argument. However, despite your rudenss, I will continue to ask questions, some of which you may not like. But, if questions are too far above your level of knowledge or expertise or if they appear offensive to you, then move on. In other words, if you don't like them, you have the absolute right to ignore the question and just move on.
I understand that your time in service was not always very pleasant. You are a very angry person. I imagine those aggravating little war demons have raised their ugly heads again. And although one might think so after reading your post, this is NOT a combat zone and you are certainly NOT at war with me,
However, ot appears more obvious that you are at war with YOURSELF.
Have a good day

I started to answer this question but deleted my words. The more I wrote the madder I got. It is funny how you worry about the Iraqis and not your own brothers and sisters stationed over there. When you say the Iraqis want us out, which Iraqis do you mean? The Muslim extremists? Yes they do want us out. They want us out so that they can kill the Iraqis that are grateful to our soldiers. Saddam's thugs would gladly fill the vacuum that we would leave. With out the US there to protect these people, they would die! Get that! DIE. Would that make you happy? Those swimming pools you seem to be so worried about would be filled with the bodies of the innocent! The women and the children. The rooms in the palace would be filled with young girls being raped by the murdering bastards that we stopped! This is what they have done in the past and would do in the future. If you do not like the way things are going join the military yourself and change things! Or, here is a good idea, travel to Iraq and see for yourself what our soldiers are up to. You will find that they help the people. They protect the people. How many times have you seen a News corespondent interview a US soldier in Iraq? Or any that have returned? You will not see it because the news networks do not want you to know the truth. Go see for yourself or SHUT THE HELL UP. You clearly do not know what you are talking about. You knw, you could go to a military base and talk to the soldiers there. Any base, just talk to a few who are doing the job that they were trained to do. Believe it or not, they do know what is going on. Or, Shut The Hell up! Investigate at the source and I will respect you. Right now you are just another miss-informed little girl.

Where would you rather they put the green zone? How many Iraqi people do you think will fit in the palace? Are you aware that the water and power is being restored on a daily basis. Terrorist are the ones who do what they can to knock it out. So if the palace was not in the green zone I bet your electric power and clear running water would be just as unstable as else where.

I won't scold you for being a liberal. I wil scold you for offering a critical evaluation with out a realistic solution. Further more I'm wondering why you have the idea that Iraqi people view our troops as common thieves? My son got back and he tells a different story. People coming up to talk to him, glad to see him thanking him. Asking when he will be back again. Inviting him into the neighborhood. He never got ambushed, he was never shot at. They were tickled to see him and happy to have him around. He never had a problem. Who have you been talking too? Where do you get your information.

I'm a little suspicious of your sources. Yes I know there is trouble there. Yes I know its getting worse at the moment. Yes I know al Qaeda is struggling to make trouble. Yes I know they are getting hurt. When my son first arrived, no on would talk to him. After he had been there a few months people were coming up to him to give him information. In fact the Iraqi people have been handing over lots of information of late.
The statistic is about a 2000% increase in tips from local people. That doesn't sound like they have slight reguard for us. Sounds like they are trusting us a lot more. How do you think we got the number 1 man behind the terrorist activities? How do you think we found sadam? How do you think we find any of them any more? Did you miss the part where they (including women) got to vote? has it not occured to you that they were very greatful for that? It was the first real election in that country since sadam took over. It has been these people who have helped us find road side bombs and lots of other problems.

So tell me who is your source of information? Why do you assume they are the one and only? Perhaps you need to find a few vets and ask them what they experienced in Iraq.

I'm glad you refuse to sip from a common cup of common knowlege but perhaps you should talk to a few common soldiers.

I"m just say'in.

Take another look at speakeasy's comments.

We handed the deadliest road in the world over to the Iraqi's over a year ago and the IEDs, VIBEDs and road side attack went up and only went down after we took back security. I have traveled that road several times as a civilian and have been in the green zone. Believe me, the mortar attacks and the car bombs far out weigh any "comfort" benefits the troops might get. Also, there are only 13 Saddam Palaces in the country, I went to about half and not all are operational.

Security and defensibility first.

Well my brother is in Iraq and he is not living in that zone. My spouse is in the military and when he was deployed he didn't live there and neither are the people he works with who are currently deployed. The only palace they ever lived in was a canvas one with 30 other people. The clean running water and air conditioning they enjoyed was from them making it themselves. They never mentioned having a pool. The only thing I ever heard about was the portable shower that they had to share with 50 other naked people at the same time. Then there was the trailer that had toilets in them and the only thing dividing each other was a canvas and one foot of space between the toilets. If you want to consider those amenities.
I never heard anything from the numerous military people that I know about living in a palace. Maybe you have to request it.

The people of Iraq have more now then they ever had under Saddam.

Do you think Saddam let the citizens live in his palace? It is the best fortified and so the best base of operations of the US while we are there.

We are there so we can provide power and water etc, which our people have been doing for several years now. The people of Iraq, when polled, are almost 100% when they answer, that they are glad the US got rid of Saddam.

But we are not doing this for Iraq. We are doing this for the citizens of the US. Prior to the US invasion, people from known terror groups were moving in and out of Iraq, using that country for movement of weapons and money. Saddam himself had a standing offer of $25,000 to the family of anyone who would strap an explosive vest on their chest (many thousands of these weapons were confiscated during our invasion) and blow up themselves along with any American citizens - I'll bet anything that you forgot about that.

As for not being a liberal, that is what you are if you are ignorant of world events and world history, and you are clearly both. Liberalism is a mental disorder, a self-destructive way of thinking. Liberals kept us out of WWII until it was almost too late. Liberals got us into the Korean conflict but refused to let us win it. Liberals got us into the Vietnam conflict, then a new batch of liberals escelated it so that we lost over 58,000 service members with no victory.

Sorry, but you are definitely a liberal.

Because it is a great place to set up a headquarters in order to facilitate combat operations. And also because we can. Yes its unfortunate that some of the people still have no power to their homes and no running water.
One thing to consider is that a lot of people didn't have these "amenities" before the war started. The US is there now trying to establish the peace needed in order give the people freedoms they had never experienced before.
My question to you is what are you doing to help those Iraqi civilians in need? Are you donating your time and money?
I know what i have been doing. Donating my sweat and blood for the last 12 years so that people unlike you can have a voice and better way in life.
It gets old reading arm chair critics post about something they have never experienced or something they have never lifted a finger in order to help others.

Because is was built as a defensible, fortified position that provides ample space to set up our military command centers. It makes perfect sense to take over an already-built command center than leave our troops and commanders exposed during the time it takes to build a new one.

The US is building new bases outside of populated areas. When they are completed, command operations will vacate the commandeered defensible palaces. I figure they'll miss the elegant swimming pools Uday and Kusay built but, hey, it's too good to last.

Iraqis actually do not look at us as common thieves. About 99% of the population is prospering, their stock market is booming, investors are helping them build businesses, they're buying appliances for their homes (and challenging the electric grid)... things are getting better daily.

There are some specific areas of Iraq where Sunnis (furious about being put out of the dominant position) and Shia (fueled by Iran's eagerness to seize control of Iraq) are duking it out. So, they live in hell-holes of their own creation.

If they have the will to united and stop the inter-Moslem competition for control of that country, it will become one of the most prosperous, luxurious nations on the planet.

We have offered them a chance for a better future than almost any other Moslem land could have. It's on their heads if they lack the sense to grasp this chance, shake hands with each other and start living it up.

It happens in war. Whatever can be used by our troops will be it's part of war. The people in Iraq never once owned any of those palaces and were a slap in the face to them. They lived in squaller conditions subject to torture and terror while their leaders lived in these magnificant palaces that they helped support. And if you could get some insight on what is really going on over there besides what the liberal media offers you would understand better.

When you enlist and fight in iraq let me know what you think then.
It is easy being an armchair quater back.

The US's first mission was to get all the city systems back on line. Most of the people that don't have power now didn't have power before the war.
